My Log Burner...

I need to buy a flue liner, pot hanger and register plate for my new installation.

Can anyone recommend a good place online?

Cheers :)

Can't recommend a place to go, but for info our installer refused to sign off a duraflue liner (I had bought and had to send back), said he had installed a few and they came apart.
He installed a Schiedel which is more expensive but he couldn't praise them enough and are rated to a higher heat tolerance.

Just moved into a place and there is a burner in the front room. I got it swept and was told all is well. So i've been burning some wood quite nicely, and it burns well.

What I don't know, is how to tell if i can burn coal in it? I've been told it has to have an ash tray, which it does, and also i need to find out what kind of a liner i've got?? As apparantly some aren't suitable for coal. Also, I'm guessing i need the smokeless coal? Can anyone in the know advise? Thanks

Some woodburner only stoves can have an ash pan. Multi fuel stoves though will have 2 air controls to feed the air in differently, depending on the fuel your burning.

As an installation company we sell over 600 coils of Dura Flue Liner a year, not had one split, load tested to a 250kg vertical load. We are one of a hand full of their trade stockists. Give me a trust message if anyone needs anything. Can post/pallet/courier anything out UK wide.

Cheers

Finished out stove install today. Had it running since 12:30. I'll get some pic up soon of the build process. I did most of the work and save over £1500 on a pro install.

would a log burner be sufficient for mildly heating a carport? If so what would you recommend please as I am having the roof re-done with felt and a large sky light instead of the clear corrugated sheets.

Thanks

sure it would - what are you trying to do keep your car warm or have somewhere sheltered to sit outside?

I've seen a few outdoor sheltered garden areas with a log burner that looked like they'd be lovely to sit out in. Kind of like a built in chiminea

Yes it's more of an area for the kids to play outside and a sit down area.

Just had a quote of £390 for fitting only aspect of a log burner.

Think we're going to go with the ST1 Vision burner as it is DEFRA approved and very well priced. Just looking around now and Woodburning Stoves Direct has the burner, flue and fixings at £749 and Stove Fitters Warehouse has the burner, flue and fixings at £778 (includes £100 discount).

Pretty sure they both use 316 grade Duraflue liners. Unsure who to go with though. I don't think either come with a closure plate.....is that something your fitter would do as part of the installation?

Pretty pleased if I can get it all done for under £1200 all inc though!

Our fitter (and i assume all fitters as every install will be different) made a custom closure plate from sheet steel and sprayed it black after sealing all of the joints with fire cement.

Question: Is there any reason why you can't just put a wood burner in an existing fire place (which is used regularly for open fires), put a ~2m or so flue pipe (doubt it even needs to be anywhere near that long?) on the top of it so ensure the smoke etc goes up the chimney properly, and away you go?

You could do this and it would work but not at the efficiently as it could run at if installed correctly.

You'll have issues with the flue not heating up enough which could lead to the hot gases cooling down, slowing the flow and performance of the stove. I know someone who has installed their own like this and the air vents hardly made any difference to the fire, however he installed a register plate which helped a lot.

After I had mine installed he visited and booked his own flue liner installation. I can control my burn from starving it to full 'jet' flames in the chamber by moving the air wash control a couple of inches.

Also, self installs are not covered by insurance.

Thanks. It's still likely to be more efficient than an open fire anyway though?

Isn't for me but a family member, I'm dying to have one but don't fancy paying to have one installed (especially as I don't have a chimney) when I'm planning to move by the end of the year.

My Clearview Pioneer 400 build

This is what I started with. A really rubbish imitation coal stove that didn't work. When we bought the house it was actually condemned but the sellers had removed the sticker and put it in the bin they left behind!

We ripped that out and found this. The previous installation had involved blocking up some of the chamber with bricks and adding a sheet of 3mm thick steel at the back.

Removed the plate and bricks to reveal the actual chamber as it should be.

What we thought was a concrete floor tuned out to be 5mm of concrete and 1m of dirt that filled in a gap above a brick archway in the seller. I'll let the pics explain.

We made some shuttering and filled the hole with concrete.

Kit arrived!

Made the chamber hole a bit taller and then added a lintel.
