Hi all

as most of you know im quite enjoying macro work at the moment and i see a lot of you are getting into it to.

i beleive a large factor of good macro shots is down to the light source, wheather this be the sun, flash or both.

i like to use flash most of the time for macro, mostly for fill in flash but sometimes its essential when there isn't enough ambient light.
one of the biggest problems i found was getting the flash gun in the right position. So i went about making a flash bracket, this being my second attempt. the first was made from solid aluminum and could hold two flash guns either side of the lens, it worked well in getting light onto the subject but as you can imagine it was very heavy and cumbersome to use.

so i went back to the drawing board and came up with this much more simple but effective design.

1
As you can see its a simple L shape, made from laminated cross core birch ply.

2
it has two cut outs for fixing the flash gun bracket and another for fixing the camera

flashbracket02.jpg

3
I made the slots long so the height of the flash can be adjusted, the bracket can also be moved forwards and backwards from the camera.

flashbracket03.jpg

4/ sorry for bad pics had to use my phone for this part.
you can see how the bracket can be moved in any direction around the camera.

5
Here's how i normaly have the flash

Because the bracket is laminated its extreamly strong so holds the flash gun comfortably, its also very very light, it weights about the same as my mac 3 razor.

The hardest part of the whole bracket was getting the 1/4 inch whitworth threads, As i believe whitworth threads were the old english standard, started in the 18th centry, they have been superseeded now by a new thread pattern but any good nut and bolt shop will still have them.

thats pretty much all there is to it. the brackets are pretty simple to make, i've made and kept the jig used to curve the bracket and was thinking of making more so i could use multiple flashes off of one bracket. if there is any intrest i could possibly make more and send them to people depending on postage costs.

any ways onto the pics. as always C+C is encouraged

i think the lighting is a bit harsh on some of them, but a decent diffuser should sort that out, i've not got round to making one of them yet :)

thanks for looking
Dan

Lovely shots, and nice rig.

Making a diffuser is dead easy :)

My rig:

Got a different flash bracket now, Delta V flash bracket.. Much nicer with a decent ball head on it, lets me keep the end of the diffuser 1/2" from the end of the lens for nice light :)

Normally use it hand held, to get shots like these:

(Yes, those are rice krispies covered in chocolate, with hundreds and thousands on them!)

Sorry for the hijack, but love see others macro shots/rigs and sharing my setup.. Could happily shoot macro all day long, and its really influenced my choice of plants for my garden!

Awesome shots guys. I don't have any photo's of my 'rig' 'cos it really isn't a rig, its a D60 with a 90mm Tamron + Sigma ring flash. I'm just starting out and so far I haven't got anything quite as good as some of these but I'm proud of a few.

I'm very happy to see that you don't always need a ring flash for macro work... Saying that those shots do have a very obvious light source at the left but like you said a diffuser would calm that down...

Awesome shots :)

I like the bracket :), you may want to take a look at adding a ballhead to mount the flash on, it will give you some extra adjustability. Good shots, a diffuser will definitely improve the lighting. I'm pretty sure that 15 is a sweat bee.

I dont like the lighting effect you get from a ring flash, too flat and not enough 'pop' to the pictures it produces.. Can get good shots with them, but give me a regular flash and a large diffuser any day of the week.

Sorry for the pic, taken with my phone. Liking the bracket famas, really need to get one myself.

And some shots taken with it:

so are those shots with the flash in its standard place like in that photo raikiri?

Bit ghetto, but this is mine;

Im not 100% pleased with it though. The diffuser is too heavy for my liking, and the light isn't as diffused as I would like. Ideally I would want a difuser 2-3 times larger, but that would be very impractical. Think i will just use natural light for now.

famas, were those daddy long legs shots taken using extension tubes? that is some outrageous magnification going on!

That's a harvestman, not a daddy long legs...A true daddy long legs is this spider. A cellar spider.

Has dark hinges on it's legs.

Still need to get a proper good macro lens myself. I always just used my 17-70mm sigma, still eyeing up that 150mm sigma...

Stunning - very clever on the rig as well - how much would be be after if I were to take one off your hands and would you supply the nuts as well?

so are those shots with the flash in its standard place like in that photo raikiri?

Yeah, well the second two are with the Sigma 500/built in wide angle diffuser. The first was with the built in flash and the last with no flash at all.

thanks for all your comments guys, its good to see other peoples set ups as well.
I've got a nice idea for a defuser which should work well, so i'll get to work on that next.

Steve, i can make you a bracket for free, the only costly part of the whole thing is the bolts, which are a few quid. i was going to make a few spares so if you want one send me your address and i'll sort you out, you'd just need to get hold of the bolts.

Pretty amazing results with that. I don't have a dedicated macro lens, these extension tubes that are talked about what lenses will they work worth, I have a 50mm f1.8, sigma 17-70 f2.8 and a 70-200 F4 L, are any of these suitable?
