My mate's way of testing for a good LCD screen...is he right?

Okay, my mate at work was saying the best way to tell whether a TV has a decent screen was by prodding it...the Samsung and LG screens, well the ones we stock, rippled with white bits...as if there wasn't a lot of 'Liquid' in it whereas the Panasonic ones didn't do that at all and nothing rippled so to speak...is he right or being an idiot?

He is an idiot, if the TV has a glossy screen, it's like a CRT, you can't "prod" it.

Tell him to stick his fingers in a plug socket to test the quality of the power coming in.

If he does that, then maybe it will shock some sense into him

You can, its still flexible, just smooth and shiny. My kid does it enough to my Samsung set

Sorry not to jump on the bandwagon, but isn't one of the ways of troubleshooting a dead/lazy pixel to 'massage' it out?

Yup. YOu can sometimes massage a dead or stuck pixel back to life. But testing the quality of a monitor from the amount of ripple is just bizare imo.

Doesn't Ripple - Plasma

I don't know

If it's hot - Cooker
If it's cold - Fridge

Ive got a dead pixel on my laptop, can i "massage" that back to life?

Possibly. Sometimes it works, but quite often it won't work. Try gently 'flicking' it with your nail and see if it helps. Running rapidly changing colours on the screen might help as well.
