So I thought I knew what upgrade to get, I have been out of the loop for about 5 years and everything has changed so much.
AMD are now seriously out of the game

I thought I should get an i7 6700 Skylake, cheap H170 or even H100 MB, 8GB or 16GB ram, new SSD, new HDD, new PSU and a case.

this will be a general use PC on 24/7 general web surfing, TV HVR (using pic-e HD dual tuner) and some video encoding (SD & HD) and maybe some video production in adobe.
NO GAMING - I can reuse my current GTX650 or onboard Intel will suffice I would assume

But then I started reading up, some reviews say skylake only offers about a 6-8% increase over Haswell and DDR4, so looked at the prices and it would be about the same although a better MB with z79 chipset.
Then I had a look at x99 and a 5820k.

I'm so confused as to what to get, my current rig is listed in my signature and tbh it is still very functional albeit a bit slow on encoding HD to x264 (about 60fps)

I looked at a lot of benchmarks and a Haswell i7 will be about 50% faster and a skylake i7 about 60% (in benchmarks anyway).

I had originally given myself a £600 budget but think I can probably stretch that to maybe £750 max.

So, do I go Haswell with a decent board, Skylake with a cheaper board or Haswell-E and x99 for long term?

This build I hope will be like my last and hopefully cover me for the next 5 years+ or so.

Any advice/recommendations would be appreciated before I order, currently so confused as to which path to take.

I think for general use, save your money and go for Haswell, it's more than capable and won't be a struggle for years to come. Use the money to go for a big SSD opposed to a small ssd and hdd. Something like a 4790k and suiting mobo, gives you the option to overclock later down the line if you feel you need it.

I wouldn't bother with an x99 unless you do loads of rendering and things.

Interesting, thanks for your reply, was not sure I would hear a recommendation for a Haswell.
OCUK have the Haswell 4790k for the same price as the skylake 6700. (£20 more)

I guess a decent MB would be better, but most of the z97 are all SLI, something I would never utilize.
SSD's are cheap as chips atm along with ram, so I guess I just need to decide on what z97 MB to get to pair with the 4790k.
Thanks for your input mate!
I might even get round to ordering it today now lol

I didn't realise this was the case, I haven't looked a prices for a while and thought it would be cheaper, but it depends on the other prices, ram and mobo as to whether it would be cheaper.. If you have no interest in overclocking you could go for one of the H boards.

Lol, I know, prices are quite high atm, I thought the Haswell would have been cheaper now Skylake has superseded it.
I am not too bothered in OC'ing, so maybe the 4790 but a decent z97 MB.
Don't see the point in going faster with the ram as the cpu only supports upto 1866.

THis is why I am so confused, think I may just say f-it and get this

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £593.86
(includes shipping: £0.00)

Gonna go grab some lunch and have a pint, think I'll order when I get home :)

Don't the Skylake CPUs come without heatsink even though they are retail? That would mean the £40 difference would be eaten by a good cooler.

Cheers fella, that was the CPU & MB I was originally going to go with :)

I did however forget to add a PSU to my build, so the £40 you saved me means the £60 Gold rated Supe Flower 550w will only add another £20 to your selection.

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/supe...0-plus-gold-power-supply-black-ca-003-sf.html

Takes me just over my original £600 budget (£625)
Now going to order it all :) Thanks again mate!
