Made this for a media pc/file server. For my new uni house where 4 people will be using it via the network.
It has:
asus p5l mx
enermax EG285-SX-VB (im sure its a 300watt or something, ill check)
a 1.8 celly (conroe based) with stock q6600 cooler
2gb ddr2
500gb sata 7200.9
a dj style aluminium 240 cd holder, which ive AMAZINGLY cut up for back IO plate and psu.
An anti vandle button (lian li style) which has got to be fitted! :P
It needs to be grounded (motherboard to case) but aside form that its fully working and boots. Its pretty much silent, apart from that it needs some vent holes. :)

Nice idea :)

If you're othered about it being perfect maybe some trim or other method to neaten the cut with the IO plate?

exactly what my dad said, bit of rubber would make it fit more snug and tidy it all up. I'll have a crack one day when I put the power button in too :D

Can probably get a rubber grommet or something from RS components or something (don't believe they're a competitor)

Looks good you've obviously put some thought into it just sort the hole :p

hole came first, making it pretty came later ;) haha

Goto design some vent holes ( just going to drill so want some sort of pattern layout)
It'll get done in the next few weeks, main pc comes tomorrow so will only put vista on this and use it as a file store and for my 360 to use. Also it'll be a nifty dl box :)

Maybe vent holes in 1/2 sides and a fan on the other that sucks it in across the MB? and yeah been thinking of a small case for my torrent/media box but antec 300 case is only like £40, cheaper than my time + materials, but less satisfaction

thats quite cool, couldnt you just drill with a small bit in a pattern then put a backing mesh to it, would look quite cool! very nice job. :)

Could do indeed! Thinking of some sort of largish logo on the front with mesh parts too it, and ill chuck a cathode inside so it glows blue :)

why you making me post here >.> you showed me this badger before. go get a dremel and go mental on it. rip the black lining out of the lid and you might be able to fit some more stuff in there?

That's a fantastic piece of kit! What's the heat like, though? I don't see too much ventilation.

no idea atm, waiting to get a dvd drive to put an os on it. I also mentioned holes will be drilled out later on, might put a silent fan in. Psu sucks air in the base and out the back though for "some" movement.

Thats the only problem with briefcase mods, you end up having to masacre the sides of them to get any half decent cooling in. What you've got there though is very impressive though!

If it was me I'd cover up the mobo with a sheet of mesh over the top, then have the optical drive in the lid. It's hard to tell how much space there is, but there's always the option of using a laptop drive instead.

I've got to ask though, (and please dont take this as a trolling, i'm just curious) why make a really portable unit and just leave it in a corner as a home server?

PK!

I made it 'cus, me and pinkfloyd were talking about building a small case from ground up. I ordered a bag of crap from a competitor and this came with it, so I thought what the hell buy a motherboard (i had everything else) and make a pc :D But then I needed a cpu and psu lol.

My mate also keeps saying put it in the car, but I dont think I will.

No optical drive for this, as I couldnt get a slot loading laptop one (else it would have), it doesnt need one, only for OS install, as it'll be a dl/cache box for now :D

Meshing for vent holes/areas has also swayed me, I might look into it more as said before with a funky design :)

Fair do's, nothing wrong with doing something just because you can!

I know what you mean about how hard it is to get a slot loading laptop drive. By pure luck my sisters laptop borked just as I was planning my shuttle mod, so I was able to get my hands on one. I really must get round to making a build log on here for it so I can make you jealous! :p

Ive been looking for one for, 2 weeks now. And missed 2 on the bay :(
I hate you.

(so i got 3 normal dvd rw's instead lol )

I've got a full size slot loading DVD-rom drive going spare if you want it, but I'm not sure its fully working. Its very noisy too, which is why after scavenging it from a machine work were chucking out I've not put it into one of my systems.

PK!

If it didnt fit so flush at the top, could have perhaps put perspex or something that you can lift out across the top, with a fan in the middle pumping air into it, similar to the transparent plastic cases you can get, but with that heatsink makes it a bit harder. Could be an idea to attemp with another hinge or something! Great mod though, tom.
