I ordered an MX518 a couple weeks ago and it's been working great so far, apart from the fact that it's letting out a very high pitch whine, which is very quiet but very noticable when you have no music playing etc. It's quiet enough to be able to ignore it although you're occasionally reminded of it. At first I thought it was simply my ears ringing for days, and kept checking my speakers/monitor/pc etc. too to see if it was those, (aswell as various clocks nearby) but couldnt find the whining, but have now found it coming from the mouse. Why would it be doing this?

my original 1600dpi mx518 did this too but didn't bother me at all as I could barely hear it, like you mentioned I think I had no idea what it was either until I put my ear right by the optical part. Don't think you should be too concerned, my mx518 still lives today since release :D

Yep mine does this too if you listen for it. Unfortunatly it's one of those things that you notice after you realise what it is. It's a very common problem so I wouldn't worry about it.

Is it the mouse itself squeaking constantly or is it just squeaking when you move it?

If it's the latter then reduce your polling rate.

Re route the cable & try another USB.
If that don't sort it ring Logitech & they will send you another one, They are Great like that.

My 518 has put thousands of hours on BF2, Untold Spammage & my hands are big heavy & rough, It's still faultless after untold abuse.

just put my day old mouse by my ear, and surprise surprise it does it :P i guess its normal, however my pc fan noise is louder than the squeal. so thus is not a problem

Oh man I can hear it now too! But it is only when you are up to 2 or 3 inches close to the mouse. I don't use the mouse that close so i guess its ok!

I just couldn't get on with that mouse. No offence to the users here but it wasn't for me. For £24.99 it's great but I had two with QC problems. The Deathadder I have now is more what I wanted. In time to come, Gigabyte will have some serious stuff to consider related to price.

I can hear it too on my MX518, never heard it before. It's like when someone points out a dead pixel on your screen, you'll never be able to lose it. I suspect that this noise is more audible on the OP's mouse than others as I need to hold it about 3 inches away before I can hear it. Even if my computer had no fans I think the idle hum of the hard drive would be more than enough to drown out the noise of my mouse.
