This is my near future rig I plan to build when I get paid. (In August when the quad core cpu price drops)

Intel Q6600 Core2 Quad 2.4ghz
4Gb (4x1Gb) Corsair DDR2 800mhz XMS2
BFG 8800 GTS OC 640MB
Asus P5N-E SLI Socket 775 ATX
OCZ GameXStream 700W
Vista Home Premium x64 - OEM
WD Raptor 74GB SATA
WD Caviar 500GB SATA
Samsung SM206BW 20" 2ms 3000:1
XION Solaris Black

Vista will be dedicated to the raptor and all others files/installs will be done on the 500Gb SATA. 64-bit OS to make use of my cpu and 4 Gb RAM.

First of all, can you guys double check that all these parts are all compatible. Secondly, How would you rate this rig?

I do a lot of Video editing / encoding hense the quad core. I'll be doing some gaming hense the RAM and 8800 gts. I got the 640mb 8800 over the 320mb one 'cos of my 20" widescreen monitor that'll be 1680x1050. 700w PSU for the 8800 that'll be SLi when I feel I need a boost in graphic performance in the future. I think it's all pretty future proof and good to go.

Anything you'd recommend or advise me on? Any advice welcome...

Edit: Ah, saw you might want to SLi in future. May be more advisable to go for the next generation of G90 cards (not the G92s) rather than going SLI in the future and take the Gigabyte.

Can you give me an example of a next-gen G90 card?

Also, which Gigabyte motherboard would you reccomend?

No, I'm not planning on overclocking as I've never done it before and not confident enough to risk it.

So you suggest getting that p35 motherboard and when I need to in the future just get a new technology G90 card like 'Benjarghmin' said?

Is 520w enough to power all of the componants?

What exactly is this new P35 motherboard technology?

Id wait around for the new G90s to come out, i beleive thats in August?? and then prices will drop and you can probly get the lower G80 GT cards.

Then you can over clock them. Its real simple with these cards, you get a program and you just put in a few figures into some boxs and its done. i beleive thats how it works with the software.

Overclocking the cpu isn't as straight forward but still pretty easy so im told :) Im going to be overclocking my Q6600 to 3Ghz when i get it i hopes :)


There is very little risk. The only risk is if you put to much voltage through it and you use it and fry it. But thats way over the recomended voltages that most people would use i beleive.

Normaly, if you push the CPU to far it will just not boot up and you need to just reset the settings on the motherboard and try again. (As far as i know).

Its very hard to significantly damage it as youd need to run it for a long time on very high heats or very high voltages to do anything i beleive.

Just to clarify, The 'G80' are any of the 8800 range right? And when you say 'G90' you are reffering to a new Nvidia 9900 range coming out soon?

What do you suggest then? I get a p35 Motherboard and wait to get a card after August from the new 9900 range (G90)?

EDIT: I'm pretty sure the 'Asus P5N-E SLI' can do SLi 8800 GTS's. :confused:

Is the motherboard (Asus P5N-E) SLi compatible? I could throw 2 8800 GTS's on it yeh?

id rather 1 top quality GTX or even a G90 GTS then two G80 GS.

There are no current games which support SLI in dx 10 at the moment and they wont be optimized properly for at least another 6 months. Maybe a year! (my personal estimates). In 6 months to a year your GTS will be worth probly 50 quid and there will be a lot more new ranges.

I'm not getting 2 GTS. I just want to know that the board can handle it in the future. So in about 1/2 years time I can just throw another one in and boost my graphics performance.

I may wait and get a G90 card tho. Then have the possibility of having 2 of those in the future.

When are the G90 cards out?
