Im now done with company cars, decided to save myself some money and get a cheap used car instead. I gave myself a budget to buy a car in the hope that it would do me for a year or two until i can save the money for something a bit better.

I considered a whole host of cars from Mondeos and other such sensible saloons and hatches to oversized ancient 4x4s and luxobarges before stumbling across this:

A 2001 Gen 7 Toyota Celica 1.8 VVTi 140bhp :)

One owner from new

Absolutely fantastic condition for a 10 year old car, the bodywork is immaculate except for a few tar spots on the front wheelarches, and the bonnet has a few strange scratched spots where it almost looks like its been scrubbed with a scouring pad which shouldnt be much trouble to put right.

The interior is also immaculate condition, not a mark on it. Its not the best looking dashboard layout in the world, and its finished in horrible scratchy plastic, but it feels very solid and well put together. The seats are fantastic though, very comfortable and supportive even for my 6' 2" frame.

Spec wise its very basic, but if I remember correctly there wasnt exactly a huge list of extras you could specify with the car to begin with. Cloth interior which is absolutely fine by me as i personally prefer it over leather, air conditioning, electric windows and a CD player seem to be it. However at this price point im not complaining.

On to the driving then, quite simply its brilliant. Given my car history of boring VAG hatches, changing to this is astonishing. Proper hydraulic steering makes it quick to respond and really lets you feel the road and what the car is doing. The gearbox is also excellent, 6 speed short throw with a stubby gearlever makes for a perfect feeling gearshift, not the floaty vague gearboxes im generally used to.

The engine is smooth and just loves to be worked hard, no mechanical problems have presented themselves, and there is no oil problem that afflicted some of the earlier 140bhp Celicas. Its not a particularly fast car (claimed 0-62 in 8.7secs) but it feels much faster due to the low ride height and quick steering. Ill have to properly test the 0-62 as im sure its closer to 7 seconds personally, any other owners on here know their times by any chance?

There are a few niggles though, the CD player volume knob doesnt work, and its very picky about playing anything but brand new discs, so ill likely replace this in the near future. It also came with a handsfree kit installed, you can probably see the massive black phone holder in the interior shot by the gearknob so ill have to take the centre console off to remove it, but ill be putting my own Parrot one in so that'll have to be done anyway. The exhaust was rattling when i bought it (managed to haggle the price because of it) but it turned out to be the heat sheild had lost a rivet and was resting on the exhaust itself, so a 2 minute fix :)

The alloys are first of all, tiny. They ruin the look of the car slightly, they also have some mild corrosion spots which is a common fault with the Celica and MR2 alloys, but its not too bad so i dont think ill bother correcting that. If anything id be looking to replace the wheels altogether for a larger set, but finding official ones is proving difficult and in not particularly keen on aftermarket ones.

Lastly, out of all the colours available, i think the silver is among the weakest. But it looks good nonetheless it just wouldnt have been my choice if i had a bigger budget.

Overall i chuffing love this car :D So pleased with it, the previous owner has really looked after it well. I was expecting it to be a complete shed when i went to view it, as i didnt think you could buy this much car for so little money. Love the looks, love the drive.

Oh and the matter of the price. Advertised for the measly sum of £2250, but was hoping to get him down to my budget of £2000. Managed £1775 in the end :D

Do your worst motors forum!

Nice.. i want one for my next car but you will be getting the scorn of motors for not getting the VVTLI 180 bhp :D

Oh yeah i expect that, but you try finding a 190 for £2000 in any condition other than awful :) In Northern Ireland as well, i dont have the level of choice you mainlanders have!

I've got one of these to tide me over. 1.8, auto, import, 2001 owned in my family since imported in 2002. 42k miles, always servised every year but lost the book a few years ago so only got the last few bills...

For £1400 I'm just glad I don't have to walk or even change gear for the next few months.

Not bad cars really. They're just a bit all show and no go though really.

Looks rather like my step brothers... which just left him and my step dad with a fairly large engine rebuild (actually exchanged the engine for a refurb) job after it dropped a big end at 110k....never sounded "healthy" to start with, mind.

Not to rain on your parade or anything :p

Doesn't seem too bad at all! My local dealer has a newer one in with a lot fewer miles for about £3500. Had no idea they were so cheap

Don't worry about not geting the 190, you have to rev the nuts of it before you hit lift anyway, you already stated that you know about the oil issues with the prefacelift 140's I would be inclinded to check twice a month if you are using it everyday, most people on Celica-Club do this, however as yours has done 108k I don't suspect there will be any issues. I never liked the standard alloys on the celica, although when I bought mine the previous owner had put some aweful black aftermarket ones on, I have since replaced them for the 17" Team Dynamic ones you get with the style/dynamic pack.

Don't think you can go wrong for £1775 that's a fantastic price, mine was £4200 last July but is an 03 plate (facelift) with 32k milage. Head over to Celica-Club if you are after an OEM headunit there is normally one up for sale most weeks.

1190kg and 140bhp isnt going to be near 7 secs 0-62.

I loved my Celica, sold it on last year but only because I was doing 500miles per week and needed something more practical. Still the besst driving position that I've ever experienced and handled exceptionally well for a FWD. Admittedly it feels a lot quicker than the specs suggest due to it's lovely light chassis and VVTI engine but whether it does 0-60 in 9 seconds or 7 is of no consequence if you like driving on twisty roads or weaving around town the balance of the car is just great.

You have the added advantage that on Warranty Direct's database the Celica is the most reliable Japanese car of the last 20 years, the least likely to break down. Unfortunately if you are unlucky enough to have a breakdown, they arent the cheapest to fix.

oh & they look fantastic in red! not many cars do imo

They do look fantastic in red i agree, that or the titanium colour would have been my preferred choice.

Thanks for the info ill be sure to look into a warranty but im not sure if its worth it for such a cheap car, although that obviously depends on the price of course and the level of cover for a 10 year old car.

Celica Club guys are really helpful! They have helped me out quite a bit with mine just need to be patient as the gen7 part can be quite quiet at times so not always the quickest lot to reply but when they do it's always really clear and concise.

Am a fellow celica owner, just hit 102000 miles myself, silver, 2000 pre facelift 140bhp model. Got it 3 years ago for about £4000 with about 50k on the clock. Ripped out the OEM headunit as it would not play cd's and have put in a double DIN pioneer bluetooth headunit. Sounds absolutely fantastic. Think there is a thread on it in the forum.

For the price you cannot get better - still such a fun car to drive, handles really well, not bad on the petrol, and still a head turner. And so reliable - for a 10 years old car its just amazing.I do have the oil problem, and looking at the pic above you have the pre-facelift model so keep an eye on your oil levels. i just top it up when it starts to get low.

Congrats! i know how chuffed you must be feeling.
