Bit of a plug.

So recently I had a bit of an epiphany. I realised that I wanted to take up photography as a really serious (like no.1 serious) hobby, but that I wasn't enjoying photography as much as I used to as a kid. The main reason for this, I reasoned, was in the shooting experience. I was so focused on getting images that would look nice on a Flickr account that I was afraid of trying new things, and was delegating a lot of things to the camera (and getting annoyed when the camera screwed up).

I sold up and bought a 5D and a bunch of manual lenses, and now I'm going to go wild. I've just written a couple of things so far, one on why I sold my x100, and another on why photography is no longer about the end product:

In my long-winded and slightly unstable post about the x100, I wrote that “Photography, as a hobby, is 50% about the shooting experience. If I can’t enjoy that fully, then what’s the point?”.

I think that this is the point made ad infinitum on internet forums whenever Leica release new cameras. You know the ones…they’re typically based on aged camera tech, wrapped in leather made from the foreskins of a hundred whisky-fed calves, sold only to people who bank in places with palm trees (switzerland? pfft) and are priced to match. Many people will say “What a joke. I can get better pictures from my 550D/D7000/5D/D700/iPhone”. A select few will say “Yes, but it’s about the shooting experience” and promptly get laughed off the board.

I would argue that yes, it is about the shooting experience. Because photography is a hobby, and not a way of making money for me, I don’t care too much about my final output. Yes, I would love to shoot something truely good once in a while (because otherwise, really what is the point?) but the most important thing for me is the feeling that I created the photo in a way that gave me enjoyment.

Anyway, I thought I'd do this blog so I could share stuff about (1) sexy manual lenses (2) the shooting 'experience', in rather hippy terms (3) new ideas for crazy projects I want to try and most of all, (4) tips and information on things I've never done, but want to learn - macro photography, epic panoramas etc. Sort of a learn with me kind of thing.

Also, I try to be funny. Read, discuss and enjoy, or groan and moan at me, either way I'll happily snap away ;).
