my new build is really loud - help

despite most things being advertised as whisper quite etc my system seems really loud. How can I track down where the noise is coming from? I don't have any spare kit to swap and try. Can I turn any of the fans off while the system is running so i can hear the difference? I did have a OCZ Stealthxstream 600Watts at first but rma'd it because the sound was ridiculous. I now have a Gamexstream 700W which is quieter but it's hard to tell where the sound is coming from. Really dissapointed that the marketing people have shafted me like this - I have spent a hell of a lot extra IMO on quiet quality components and got the loudest computer I have ever had by far. Help...

My Arctic Freezer 7 Pro sounds as if it's vibrating sometimes and is loud, is it a sort of humming? Also, ATI cards have been known to have loud coolers :(.

I spspect it's one of them that is the problem. Sometimes it sort of whirs rather than a constant noise. If I reset the cpu speed to standard so it's not producing extra heat, can I stop the cpu fan without damaging the cpu?

Failing that; can I stop the graphics card fan when it's not being used for 3D stuff / not stressed?

What makes things worse is the left hand side of the case has millions of holes punched into it so you can see through it but the sound leaches out too.

Thanks

Nope the CPU fan has to be on or you'll toast your cpu,

As above change the stock cooling on your graphics card to an aftermarket cooler

Will that trash the warranty?

Not done anything like that before and not too keen to be honest esp. as I haven't confirmed it's the problem yet.

I heard there was a BIOS update for noisey graphics cards would that help?

As long as you remove the stock cooler properly and keep it in good condition, i wouldnt have seen there being a problem 'if' something went wrong, to refit it again.

Heard a few things like this esp. with motherboards when the NB heatsink has been replaced and the motherboard has died.

My money would be on case fans, and case material. Is it this case?

No this is the case (the full server one, not the junior)

I have a 12cm fan front and back but the one at the front is not powered as it didn't make much diff to temps. There is an 8cm fan in the side but both the rear and side fans are turned down to the point where I can't hear them over and above the cpu fan and / PSU and graphics card fans.

I was looking at getting one of these to cool my 1950pro:

Shows amazing performance for the price. Up to u how much you want to spend, as there is this one:

Which is a bit more.

Thanks. I'll read some reviews. didn't want to spend any more money on this build but the noise is driving me nuts. Could do with a cheap pcie graphics card so I could confirm it's the grafix card.

it will either b the gfx or the cpu cooler.

check how fast your cpu cooler is running the artic 7 pro is great but at full speed is noisy. i run mine at 50% speed and its still cools great but now doesnt make much noise :) normally most modern mobos have a setting in yoru bios you can change or with an overclocking tool that comes wit the mobo were you can adjust the sped of the fans in your case.

I know that i find the HSF on the Sapphire 1950pro is a bit of a pain, not so much a whirring noise, more of a whooshy noise when it speeds up, as i have it set in ATiTool to keep the temp of the core below 50 degrees (so it is pretty much speeding up most of the time, lol)

Dont find it too bad really, as have a couple of 80mm fans in there which are about the same decibel level.

CPU cooler settings are all set to Auto. I should point that the sound is way too loud when the machine is idle not just when running 3d apps or the cpu is stressed. I can't reduce the speed of the cpu fan due to heat being generated. I do hear the graphics card fan speed up when I run a 3d app.

Is there a tool that will let me see the fan rpm or the graphics card fan rpm? Speedfan does not seem to give accurate results for me.

Thanks

ATITool is quite a useful utility for linking GPU fan speeds with temps. So when not gaming you can set it to run at something like 20% (which is what I had for my 1900), which was very quiet. My next setting was 70C (I think) when I increased the speed to about 50%. The final setting was about 80C, when I would set the GPU fan to 100%, However, this very rarely happened unless I was 3 hours in on a gaming session on a hot summers day!

Surely you can turn the fan off on the gfx gard if you are not running 3d apps? Can u do that in atitool?

Thanks eveyone. I'm going in...

Will take a look at atitools too. If I can set the fan speed lower without affecting temps that'll be great.

Will report back later.

Just put your finger on the centre (CAREFULLY) and apply gentle pressure to slow the fan for a short time. Do this with each of your fans in turn - you will soon find out where the problem lies. It might even by your PSU (you can't do the finger trick here), which if it is, I am afraid you can do nothing but replace it with a quieter variant.
