My New Build - Suggestions

OK My PC has started playing up recently. It's an Athlon with 1Gb RAM, 120Gb HDD and an All in Wonder Graphics Card.

It's annoying me and it's quite loud so I've decided I want to build another one.

How does this spec sound? Also any suggestions?

CPU - AMD Athlon 64 x2 6400+ (3.2Ghz)
MB - Gigabyte GA-MA69VM-S2 690V
RAM - 4Gb DDR2 800 Mhz made by Corsair
Fan - OCZ Vendetta
DVD ReWriter - Cheapo Sony DRU-190S 20X
PSU - Extra Value 550W ATX Silent Neon PSU

I will use my current case as it's a nice Cooler Master one and I have an All In Wonder Graphics card that I think I'll replace at some point but haven't got a clue what I'm looking for. I'll also use my 17" TFT Monitor which will do for now.

Total Cost of build (not including GC) = £303.04

This sound any good?

What PSU would you suggest?

The one I was looking and the word silent caught my eye and the fact it's so cheap.

I didn't want to spend more than about £200 but then I started reading into the 6400+ and got excited. So I think I'm gonna build a PC that'll last me a while. No overclocking, just stock and keep it cool.

First of all get rid of the competitor link, completely star it. Don't buy from them EVER! And did you never wonder why it was so cheap ? :D

Pay the extra money and get a name brand PSU from Corsair or somebody

Any real reason your sticking with amd?

I was in a similar boat back at easter and found that for about the same sort of money i could jump ship to intel and have a much faster pc....

Oh also your not allowed to post links to competors here (and you probably dont want that psu anyway, a branded one will be better in a few years come another upgrade as it should be re-usable)

Edit: too slow :(

Apologies for the link. I have usually bought from them as I've never had a problem. I'll look on here then.

I like AMD, have always had them generally as I think they're value for money. If it ain't broke don't fix it...

Humm i know what you mean (i liked my old dfi board but couldnt afford one for my last build). Do you plan to game, photoshop etc?

ill point out now (aslots of poeple will probably scream) that even the top end amds are out performed by the mid (ish) range intels, were taling the E7/8 intels or Q6's are all faster than amd athlon 64's and phenoms. (i know its a bit sad really, but meh they each have their day and the intels are really good)

Well I'll be doing mainly Football Manager and watching films at the same time on an expanded desktop with the occasional DVD ripping and gaming.

Ah ha! one use for a fast processor!, urm yeah you'll find dvd ripping faster wuth core2 (about a third of the time i found or so) but yeah you probably wont notice too much difference between core and k8 (though FM might get a bit quicker)
