Picked this up today, I'm selling my bike as I don't use it and would like something to fettle and polish and take the family out with to the pub or the beach. Started thinking of something middle of last week, looked around and for the money I want to spend was looking at a Saab / Golf / Escort, plumped for the Escort as it brings back memories :p

Specs

XR3i Cabriolet
H reg 91
75,000 miles
FSH
Electric windows / hood / mirrors / heated front screen
New MOT
Runs well doesn't smoke or overheat
Massive pack of history from previous owners

No major bad points just a couple of niggles, tyres were on advisory as cracked and aging and could do with a polish and wax.

How much did you pay?

I was bidding on it on Ebay and it was listed poorly just Escort Cabriolet and no real info nothing about XR3i or history, it didn't meet the reserve and I went to look at it outside Ebay, bloke said he wanted £1,100 for it I bid him £950 ended up at £1,000 and I found a £1 in the ashtray so £999, which I'm very happy with.

I don't know much about the £1000 area of the car market, but I am fairly sure the Escort had long long gone from it and was closer to the £200-500 market.

What was it about this particular Escort that puts it with its £1k competition? In winter would this car not have been 1/3 of the price?

No :p some are asking >£3k for very low mileage minters (not that they will get it) a £250 - 500 one is either an early low spec MK5 with no MOT used and or abused or a very snotty MK4 XR3i probably needing welding and running issues which they suffer from or in need of a hood again and or hood motors.

I'm loving the keyboard car salesmen :p

Thing is its got a huge bracing loop thing in the middle and the roof sits on the back like a pram, so its nearly a normal car with a panaromic roof rather than a cab :D

In the same way a Caterham 7 has got a panoramic roof? it's only a roof bar hardly like me (or Ford) trying to say a 'T' bar MR2 is a Cabriolet :p

Looks to be a nice 'un in the pictures mate...now get yourself over to the XROC!!!
:)

Tried and looked into membership for insurance discount but all the links are dead ends and the phone number doesn't work, £150 fully comp with an agreed value isn't bad though :)

Really come on, did you just sort by lowest price and post the cheapest two :p, I looked at Golf's and Saab's, I figured when the Saab dropped a big bill it would be out of my spanner range and write it off cost wise and the Golfs although there was some nice condition later models with more miles they just don't appeal to me.

Recaros were Ebay and needed bases as they had all collapsed, Ebay again and 1/2 hour to fit, also covered in grease as they look like they have been sitting in someones garage for a while, Recaro recommend Woolite to clean and boy what a job it did, they are still wet so they look darker and patchy.

Spotlights, well there are two types, Ford ones which are cheap and Carrello 640's which are like Hens teeth to find, I had to buy three sets to make one decent set and they light up a treat, brackets are the same, fortune on Ebay and was looking at rusty sets for £30 whan a brand new set with the Ford part number turned up for £50, cheeky bid at £40 inc postage and they are mine :)

Also changed the rear bench as the old one had fag burns, the seats match the door cards so no messing around.

Bought leather cover for the hood as well so no more looking like a pram is laid on the back.

Future plans, maybe change the speaker pods for standard as the have been chopped about and maybe see if there are any new headlights about as these are corroded on the rear.
