A monitor at near enough half his budget, with a graphics card that can't even handle it.

Yes, because last time I checked you needed an 8800GTX for playing movies, running excel and using the internet :p

Everyone knows even an 8800GTX struggles with excel and basic video play back :p

Still, I would rather beef up the rest of the components and get a cheaper monitor, but smaller so it was still good quality for the money :)

For £1000 I wouldn't settle for less then an 8800GTS or a 2900HD.

£200 on gfx card,
£200~ on monitor,
£100 on Mobo, k/b and mouse.
£100 on cpu + cooler,
£100 on hdd and soundcard,
£100 on case and PSU.

£800 + VAT = £950~

Roughly how I'd break down a cpu

But surely it's dependent on the uses... sure an 8800GTS is great if you game but I would much prefer a 24 inch Dell if my main concern was watching movies and doing work.

personally - lower the monitor size and up the GPU - 8800GTS - surely - 2oo quid well spent - i got a lovely Asus 19" LCD for 150 quid - dont need to spend 350!

But he isn't playing games, the bigger the screen the better for movies and if it isn't fast enough for him you can get an x1950pro for £82.

The fact is, he said he doesn't play games. He does watch movies though, therefore a low end card and high end monitor is perfectly acceptable.
