Hi guys,

Built my first ever PC last weekend - very chuffed. Went for the Dual-Core E5200, as I have always fancied trying out overclocking - I should point out that I am a COMPLETE OC NOVICE

So I disabled SpeedStep in the BIOS, and have been slowly increasing my FSB in the BIOS. Once into XP, I am then running Prime95 for 30-60mins on the Large FFTs test. Very basic steps at first!

At stock speeds, the temperature (on stock Intel cooler) peaked at 58degrees. I'm now at 3.08GHz, and Prime95 peaks at a max of 62degrees. My next step is to buy a decent CPU cooler (Zalman or Asus prob) and continue my fun/learning! I am reluctant to continue experimenting on the current Intel HSF.

So... what will eventually happen? I keep hearing about the BSOD. Will I get so far with the FSB, and then regardless of temps, Win XP just son't boot? Is this where I raise my Vcore? What sort of speeds can I eventually expect if I am lucky?

If all you've done so far is raise the fsb, then yea, it will start failing prime 95 tests and eventually wont boot. At this point (when it starts failing prime95) you should raise you Vcore a little bit and try again. Its when you start raising Vcore though that you really need to keep an eye on your temps. :)

I think you should be able to get aroun 3.8GHz if youve got a good chip. Aim for around 3.6GHz and see any more as a bonus. But still do it all in slow steps, its repetative, but much easier in the long run. Big jumps can make it hard to figure out how much you need to alter things if it starts BSODing

Good luck with this :)

Thanks Ducky Spud!

Your answer was exactly what I was after. heck, if I end up with even 3.5Ghz I will be well chuffed :D

Just need to decide which cooler to get now...
