And comes up with a POST error saying that the BIOS needs to be updated because it doesn't recognise the CPU. The problem is that according to the Asus site, my motherboard (a p53-vm hdmi m-atx board) doesn't have the necessary bios to support this cpu. It says it needs the 0604 bios but my motherboard bios download page only has bios's going up to 0506.

The 'good' thing is that I can start installing WinXP despite my motherboard not supporting my cpu. The bad thing is that it BSOD's just after it's loaded all the drivers. At first I thought that because the bios is out of date its reading the cpu temperature incorrectly but now I actually think it is indeed running at 108C! I've fixed the HSF on correctly and applied some AS5. What the hell is going on?!

I would still say Bios and readings are wrong esp if your sure the Coolers fitted correctly.

I cannot even find that Model of Mobo in the drop down menu.

Yeah, it's BIOS/motherboard...
Intel CPUs have long had built in thermal management (throttling/shutdown) in case of overheating so there wouldn't be any way to get it that hot.

so have I got a cpu that my motherboard won't support?

You stated above it needs a new bios #604.

When the E8500 was new I fitted mines with the Mobo's current Bios, all it said at Boot Screen was something like "Your CPU is not running at Full Potentual, please update Bios" or words to that effect.

It did not effect anything just ran a slower speed till I got the Bios to support Wolfdales.

The newer E8600 with its fixed issues of Temp Readings needs a newer Bios again, which I already grabbed last week before I got the E8600.

okay - I don't mind doing that... it's quite a new cpu so I guess the bios updates will come afterwards.

'fixed issues of Temp Readings' - what does that mean? does it mean that motherboards with the wrong bios and the e8600 will display the wrong temperature reading no matter which motherboard you use?

yes the bios temp monitor is just a reading from below the cpu anyways the monitors inside the cores will still be active and cause thermal shutdown if needed.

Id suggest updating the bios aswell.
