I've been using the excellent non-IS version for some time and it's brilliant except that it's non-IS.
I've not been getting the hand-held keepers I want so I bit the bullet and went into Jessops in Kingston this morning.
The young fellow gave me an unbeatable price and then we had a brief discussion of the merits of various lenses.
He was a (Canon) photographer and really knew his stuff. The High Street and especially Jessops seem to come in for a fair bit flak on forums but this a very positive experience for me.
I had to shift a 17-40L to compensate for this purchase and I shall be looking to off-load the 100 non-IS.
Off to Kew Gardens now to catch some creepy crawlies.
 
Can I ask what the focusing speed is like on this lens? Compared to the 135L if you happen to have it as reference also?
 
I think this is a great lens. I bought it from kerso about this time last year and spent the whole summer chasing bugs around the garden. The problem is I can never find enough different bugs, there are plenty of hover flies and house flies but I can't find anything more exciting than that.

I can't comment on the focus speed compared to the 135L as I don't have one, however, I have been playing around with the focussing this afternoon.

On the non-IS there are 2 focus options, 0.31 to inf. and 0.48 to inf.
On the IS version there are 3:
0.3 to 0.5, 0.5 to inf. and "FULL".
I had difficulty in getting focus with the first but with the other 2 it was fast.
Purely subjectively it was the same as the non IS lens.

It was in the area of Image Stabilisation that this lens really came into its own.





The fly was tiny and they're quite a crop from the original. The light was starting to fade, the 1st shot was at 160th and the 2nd at 1/80th.
While the 2nd is far from a good macro shot I know I wouldn't have managed to approach that with the non -IS at that shutter speed.
