This morning I choked and spat out my coffee and showered my monitor, I cleaned it and that was that but now there is a huge and still growing black mass bottom left so it's new monitor time.

With the prices on monitors these days it feels like such a gamble to go with something unknown. GSYNC is a must. Never had a 27" because I found it pointless at 1080p and 24" IPS panels don't exist so if I want to move from TN for IPS which I'm not sure if I do I also need to go 27" which isn't to bad because I'm open to moving up to 1440p but now we're talking in excess of £600 which is a complete turn off.

TN panels are more reasonable in price this AOC monitor nearly fits the bill - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/aoc-...d-multimedia-monitor-black-red-mo-047-ao.html has everything except 27". The rainforest has it in 27" for £20 more and an IPS version at £550.

With those AOC monitors there's an easy to see £150 increase for IPS. Is IPS really something to worry about? I near people swear by it even over TN panels for gaming but I'm not sure I want to pay £150 to find out...

Black Friday coming up too so I won't buy until then so I have time to figure it out and get input.

I initially bought a Dell S2716DG for my G-Sync driver. I also own an OLED TV, and the washed out colours and colour shifting were immediately apparent. Within a few months I'd sold it and move to the Acer XB271HU, a 165hz IPS panel, and barring the first panel having terrible BLB, I've been delighted with it ever since. Colours are FAR more vibrant and contrast looks better overall. IPS glow is only an issue when you look from the sides, and it's far less jarring going from OLED to this (as the colours are more accurate over all).

Personally, IPS was worth the premium.

Looking at the black mass yesterday and moving the mouse down there, it looks like the mouse is moving behind it but like it isn't rendering due to dead/stuck pixels. Later in the day I noticed the mass had shrunk and has left some stuck/dead pixels where it withdrew from.

My brother offered me the use of his second monitor to tide me over but for now I'm really intrigued by this black mass' behaviour so I'll stay on this screen a while longer to keep an eye on it's regression. I'm tempted to get the hairdryer on it.

And my question about IPS being worth the large amounts of money over TN panels, the answer is no so long as the TN panel is 8 bit.

My new Asus PG278QR is here and damn is it glorious. I have some pics I'll post back with later with how the colours are next to my old monitor.

Okay here is a pic with my new PG27Q8R next my old(now second) monitor, in a spoiler tag because I don't want to resize.

@_chief_ @strumpusplunket I thought you two especially might like to see :)

144Hz is glorious and the image quality at 1440p is so sharp and so easy to see and it's definitely made a believer in what UHD could look like.

Even with my old x58 build and 970, at 144Hz and 1440p I'm still maxed out in Overwatch and Rocket League. I had 50 to 60fps in Monster Hunter: World at 1080p 60Hz and I had to drop the settings a little to get that back at 1440p.

Oh and that pic is straight from the box too so no calibration. I have tried making changes in the nvidia control panel to tweak the Gamma because I do have colour banding I want to try and reduce but for some reason the changes don't stick.

And bottom left of the right monitor you can see the black mass that made me want a new monitor.

Damn it's good to have two monitors again :D

Nice! :D You can really see the difference in colours. The new one looks great. Viewing angles and gamma shift okay as well? You get a good Black Friday deal in the end?

I went for the £630 deal on the X34P in the end. My first ultrawide and first IPS:

I'm a bit in love! I think this is the best PC-related purchase I've ever made. So much space!

Good to hear you're pleased, too @esoteric!

Viewing angles are as expected. I need to look at really extreme and inappropriate angles for the colours top be effected. The gamma needs tweaking a little bit but I can't do it because it keeps resetting in the nvidia control panel as soon as I click back to desktop and I can't find a way to stop it. Got the monitor for £499.99 ;)

How wide is your X34P bezel to bezel?(get tape measure out!) It looks so unpractical having a screen that wide so close. I would definitely have to see and use one in person before jumping on that wagon :o

Bezel to bezel it's 82cm wide (I already checked this in product specs and measured up my desk space :)).

It does still feel a bit overpowering at times. When I first loaded up The Old Blood, I started feeling nauseous after about five minutes playing. I think this was because my habitual gaming posture always had me leaning forwards slightly with my eyes only about 35-40cm from the screen. That's fine for a 24" screen, but much too close for one this big. I couldn't see the edges properly and I guess it was messing with my sense of balance and motion.

It has forced me to sit more upright so I am at a distance where the whole screen is just about filling my vision. This is not only incredibly immersive in games (seriously, it looks absolutely amazing!), but it's also better for my posture, so win-win! :)

Plus I am so loving having two full-sized document and web browser windows side-by-side.

I'm so jealous :p I saw that 630 offer but it was above my budget and too big for my current desk (temporary situation....). The worst part is that it's a damn good offer...
