Hello all,
Dont know if this is the right place for this, but I have built myself a somewhat budget PC but with noise reduction in mind.

Specs:
MSI K8n Neo 4 Mainboard
AMD Athlon 3500+
1GB memory
512mb XFX 7300gs PCIx
250Gb Samsung SP2504C SATA
250Gb Hitachi IDE
Sony DVD RW DW-G120a

Mods:
Akasa CPU fan
Akasa 8cm Fan
Akasa 47 in one card Reader
Akasa Pax-Mate V1 Acoustic Sound Proofing Kit
Enermax Fan controller with digi display
Zalman ZM80D-HP Silent Dual Heatpipe VGA Heatsink

Heres the pics of the build:

The main board with the stock AMD fan removed

Now with the replacement Akasa fan installed - This fan is already quieter than the stock AMD fan but i guess this will invalidate the warranty - oh well...

2.JPG

This is how the cables used to be, next to the heatsink - not a good idea in my mind so i used a small cable tie to get it away from the cpu cooler

4.JPG

Right the 512MB XFX 7300gs Card again with the stock cooler on, this really annoyed me, the PC is so loud with this on it, lets take it off...

Right we got the cooler off, a little bit tricky and had to use isoclene to clean the main GPU ... continued next post!

now the Zalman ZM80D-HP Silent Dual Heatpipe VGA Heatsink kit laid out in all its glory?

now the Zalman is installed, pretty bulky and very heavy!

Here you can see the main board is in place and the Akasa Pax-Mate V1 Acoustic Sound Proofing Kit is installed, took some time to install as i had to take the top off the case and cut it in places to fit around the drive bays at the bottom

now the mainboard cables are all nicely tucked away and out of the flow of air.

Total build time was about 5 hours before O/S installation. I have installed Windows XP despite having a copy of Vista available.

I am currently testing the system under normal windows usage but I want to test the system under pressure to see how hot the GPU gets, hence the Enermax UC-A3FATR2S Multifunction Panel (2x Adjustable Fan RPM,Temp display + Alarm).

Now my questions -

The Graphics card is "reported" at 37.4-37.8 under windows xp normal load - word pro etc and has gone upto 40.3 under full graphics conditions on Grand Prix 4. how do those temps sound to people?

And what do you think of my first attempt at a quiet performance (okay stop laughing) PC?

Welcome to the Forums :)

Looks like a nice piece of work to me.......any thoughts on the motherboard fan ? Perhaps a passive sink there too ? Akasa do some natty things along those lines....assuming it is actually noisy enough to bother you ;)

Also consider some cases are quieter than others....for instance, my Antec P180 can be particularly quiet with the right gubbins inside......not that it is right now

yup one step ahead of you - knida
I bought a Zalman ZM-NBF47 Fanless Northbridge Cooler but the heat pipes from the GPU cooler are in the way, I am looking at a way of adjusting the fanless cooler to fit, but knowing me thats when the board will go bang!

Can you mount a larger (12cm) fan at the front of the case in place of the current one.....tend to spin slower and shift more air into the bargain...... :)

yes I oculd but my fan controller keeps it at 1000rpm before moaning at me, I am looking into removing the buzzer from the controller and then replace it with a 12cm fan, can you reccomended a quiet 12cm fan at all?

Um, my P180 came with Antec's own Tri-Cool fans....think you can pick them up individually too ? and they are pretty good....that said, don't know too much about what choices there are because of the pre-fitted fans :p

The newly arrived sharkoon silent eagles have very good reputation for shifting a lot of air for the noise produced, 1000rpm model will be quiet, but 2000rpm will be the serious air shifter.

Think about getting a fan controller so you can tune them to a speed that works best for you too.
