Hi,

After months of searching around for the best reference monitors, i bought a set of ADAM A7X monitors for £720. Its one of the first batches to arrive from the ADAM dealers in Europe into Nottm.

Old speakers (now to be sold):

My old setup was a couple of Tapco S8's which are great for the generic hi-fi sound, but the difference between these is incredible. The attention to detail is absolutely astonishing.

I know this isnt specifically aimed toward the majority of users on this forum, but thought it might make a bit of a change. :)

They were custom made by my uncle. :)

I've text him to ask how and what they are made from. High density foam is definatly inside, but not sure on what they actual structure is comprised from. :)

He did a great job.

Thanks. Will tell him you said so. He's just text me back. MDF for the top and bottom. Cardboard tube lined with high density foam connecting the two. Primed with 2 coats of water based primer, finished with car spray paint! :)

@rebel rebel: It's actually a really basic setup.

Rack mounted M-Audio soundcard (below screen) is connected to PC via firewire 400 cable. Balanced outputs from the soundcard at the rear go into each of the speakers for a main stereo mix. Good external soundcard is definatly required to get the best quality possible.

Looking good, nice choice - where's the rest of your stuff though? Don't suppose he'd take commission to do a pair of speaker stands?! Been a while too, you still use MSN?

Ok thanks that's helped me a lot. Im getting some monitors soon, probably KRK RP8 G2's. I was looking to connect them with a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB, but as im a bit clueless in this department im open to alternatives. Your uncles made a good job of those stands.

Most of the other gear is being borrowed for a while by a friend. :o

He's a carpenter so i'm sure he'd be more than happy to rustle something up if you wanted it. Obviously the speaker stands that i have are slightly larger than the new speakers, but he'll make them according to the dimensions of the speaker if you would so want, as well as the hight, so that you are sat at the same ear level as the tweeter. The beauty of them is complete isolation from any surface that would resonate, and the fact that i havent seen any speaker stands that will fit onto a desk, rather than full size ones that need to be on the floor. Isolation pads are good at what they do, but they look slightly bizarre on a wooded surface just by themselves!

I don't use MSN so much anymore at all. Since it changed to crappy windows live blah blah :o:D. Still use a 10 year old Hotmail account though! I'll have to pop back on a have a chat :)

Those monitors are fantasic, especially the highs, mmm makes me warm lol

Try and get them a bit closer together if you can so the distance from you to one speaker is the same as the distance between the speakers

You should hear the lows! I was really surprised to hear the clarity in the bottom end. Larger more powerful amplifiers drive a larger 7" woofer, extending the frequency range down to 42hz. The original A7's lacked quite a bit of bottom end unless driven really loud, making them harsh sounding over short periods of time. These have as much apparent loudness and fullness as the 8" Tapco's, but with tons more detail. It's scary how many things i've now noticed that i never knew existed! but yeah, the top end is lushous. Even better than the original A7's.

Stand pics:

Although remind me to clean them before taking pictures in sunlight! :o:D

They look fab, but no foam/insulating material for the speakers to sit on? I'm currently using 2 foam pads (1 per speaker) from the Logic 8 packaging!

There's some high density foam placed inside the central part (tube) which removes all the vibrations, so not needed. :)

Great monitors, I've got some A7's sitting next to my Genelec 8020/7050b combo and they're great. We have the A7X's in my shop, very nice. :D

How you liking the focusrite liquid mix? I have one too, but am currently using a lot of UAD2 plugs. what DAW you running dude?
