Hi Guys,

So, I'm a long time reader of this part of the forum with the very occasional post... Mostly because of my terrible car history in the past. Now that this has improved I'll hopefully get more involved - just thought I'd make a post showing off my new car!

5 weeks ago I drove a 2002 Ford Focus before handing it over to my Dad and heading down to London to pick up my new car. Yes... it's "recession" white. Originally I was not a fan and I wasn't considering one, but when I saw this colour combination I was converted.

Anyway, pictures (taken on a not-sunny day with my HTC One M8 potato):

(A few more Here)

I know it's not as fancy as some cars on here (Today's M5 and Housey's R8 spring to mind) but I'm unbelievably happy with it.

Specs:
- August 2013 Z4 LCI 35iS
- 3l Twin Turbo N54 engine -340BHP,
- 7 Speed DCT Gearbox,
- 19" Style 326M wheels,
- Adaptive M Suspension,
- Folding roof,
- Metallic Mineral White exterior,
- Red Kansas leather interior, with brushed aluminium trim,
- Professional Navigation,
- Professional loudspeaker with DAB,
- Heated seats,
- Front/Rear parking sensors,
- Adaptive headlights,
- High beam assist,
- Extended storage,
- Auto lights/auto wipers/auto climate

It's easily the most powerful car I've owned and it's addictive, the power is effortless. The DCT is a joy around town, I've found, the changes are hardly noticeable, and when you want to floor it it's as responsive as I'd want.

The 35iS has a bit more power than the standard 35i and a louder exhaust, the noises it makes are awesome :D Pops and crackles on gear change, especially downshift, and a lovely grumble when pushing on. Planting your right foot at 50 ish results in a cracking noise and silly speeds in no time - it's quite deceptively quick.

I was weary of buying a sporty car with an auto, but after test driving the newest BMW standard auto and then the DCT in a 35i I was converted. It makes getting out of the city in the morning easy, changes in the blink of an eye when you're actually driving and I'm even enjoying the paddle shifts when on a more "spirited" drive. Yeah, a manual may have been more involving, but this suits me perfectly.

The car is on runflats at the moment and the ride is quite firm, but not too bad. I think the adaptive suspension helps with this as the car manages to soak up most poor roads well. However, hit a pothole and you'll know about it through the noise alone. I had to have one with the 326M wheels though, I think they finish the car off better than any other wheel they offer on the Z4.

High beam assist and adaptive headlights are a bit of a gimmick, I find the high beams take a bit too long to lower when traffic is approaching and sometimes just plain don't bother, but the lights themselves are really rather good. The LCI got the new style of lights with the whiter coloured bulbs, so even in DRL form they look great. When the dark comes they illuminate everything in front of you (But I am comparing that to my focus from 2002).

The white manages to stay quite clean, even when it isn't, so I'm happy with that. It does look awesome when properly clean though, so it's something I'm going to have to keep on top of. I had been looking for a few months and aiming to buy before the summer tax for this sort of car arrived, thankfully I did. I test drove the TT, SLK, Z4 and Boxster and felt the Z4 was the best all rounder. It's definitely the prettiest, has a lovely 6 cylinder engine and has a much better interior than all but the very latest TT and SLKs (out of budget with decent engines). The argument that the Boxster is a better driver's car is probably valid, but the refinement and surprising comfort the Z4 offered means it'll be a better "normal" car I think. Not to mention the poor spec for most Boxters I looked at.

In the end I bought private from someone who had clearly cared well for the car. It's not had any issues (as you'd expect) and I'll be purchasing the BMW warranty when the new car one expires in 6 months. When I picked it up the car had done 7,250 and it's now done 9,500. The cost was £26k, which some may find expensive for a "last generation" BMW, but I don't feel short changed when sat inside it. Considering I saved three or four thousand compared to buying from a dealer I think I got a pretty good deal.

Oh, and only £440 a year to insure, even though I'm 24, with 15,000 miles a year as it's my daily.

So yeah. Very, very happy, have been enjoying the nice weather up north lately and will hopefully carry on enjoying the car for the next couple of years. Might even post a bit more or come to a meet should any happen nearby.

Be gentle, OcUK!

I live everything apart from the colour :(

:( Don't be like that... I was originally of the same feeling, but it's definitely growing on me. It's not solid white, so when the sun hits it you get some great shifts in the colour.

But yeah, it is white, so fully expect to be told I forgot to paint my car after the primer went on.

Very nice, something I have been considering as a 2nd car. Same spec and colour I would be looking for.

I'm really very happy, it's a capable car. I guess the only thing you may want to consider is that, with it being a weekend only car, maybe you'd prefer something a bit more raw? It definitely has go and looks the part, but it's more of a small-GT than a full out racer in my mind. If you do go Z4 though then the 35i/35iS are the ones to find.

Nice. 'Tarts handbag' apparently.

I think they look great in that combo. The iS with DCT sounds amazing on the up shifts too

Ha, wow, that's one I haven't heard. But yes, the exhaust pops when in sport going up the gears. Apparently it'll only get more vocal as the mileage increases too.

Looks really nice that.

Impressive being able to drop £26k on a car at 24. Well done.

Thanks. Didn't mean to drop my age in to brag, was more pointing out my surprise at the insurance cost.

I'm loving having no roof. Colleagues just don't get it, until they come out with the roof off. If it isn't raining then it's down (unless the lady friend is in a mood :p)

Looks great :) Mineral white is actually really nice too, much better than Alpine white which is the real recession white :p It's a no cost option on the 35is, but on lower models your paint is a £550 option over the free Alpine.

Get yourself on the z4 forum, and get along to some meets :)

It does look much better than alpine white. Already a member of z4-forum.com, it's actually how I found it!

I hate the new front wing model designation BMW have chosen to slap onto not only the Z4 but other models too. I just think it's too long and looks weird, like as if someone has stuck on a shopping list horizontally.

Other than that though this shape Z4 is really nice!

I know what you mean, the whole sDrive bit is a bit redundant. On the 2014 onwards MSport models they even shove an ///M badge on there too

The coupe is 1400kg.

Whereas Wikipedia puts the 35iS at 1525kg, so it is heavier than the previous gen Z4, but that's probably down to the metal folding roof.

The car does have the run flats on it at the moment and the noise is noticeable. I hear good things from owners about switching to new tyres, but as they've all got 4/5mm left on them I can't bring myself to needlessly shell out £600 for replacements yet. When it needs new tyres they will not be RFTs, that's for sure.

Somewhat surprisingly my self-calculated total MPG since buying it is 26.6mpg - could have been worse. Got 31 on a trip down to Cambridge last weekend and my commute to work (mix of A/B roads) has the car saying 27, so I'm fairly happy with that.

I've got a 35i DCT and love it. I don't agree that it is too heavy as it certainly doesn't feel it even when pushed pretty hard on the road and the handling is much, much better than internet reviews would have you believe.

I'd agree. I was expecting it to be terrible after reading some reviews, but when you really want to push the car allows you to do so. It's surprisingly planted in the corners, but I can see why some people slate it for being a bit numb in the twisties.

I know you've only just got the car, but soon enough you will likely not even bother looking at the cost of fuel, just roll up, fill up and enjoy the car's dynamics more than anything else!

Otherwise, what's the point in getting a performance car? :p

Wouldn't get too hung up on weight either. As DRZ says, it's a non issue because the car is well sorted to account for any weight gains. I've never driven the Z4, but even my M3 weighs more yet feels well planted on the twisty roads.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bothered about the MPG at all. Like you say - what would be the point?! If I was worried about that I'd have bought an EcoBoost Fiesta or a diesel TT :p

The weight isn't a problem either, it's not a car that feels heavy. It's nimble enough around the corners and fast enough in a straight line to keep me happy, anyway.
