My OC PC always at 4.4 GHz in CPU-Z

Hi all

I have purchased a system from OCUK and have been using prime 95 and CPU Z to check the OC. When using prime 95 the core speed is around 4.4 GHz and core temp goes up as expected to around 70 C.

But when not using prime 95 the temps go down as expected to high 30's low 40's but CPU Z still shows core speed at around 4.4GHz 95% of the time, momentarily dropping down to around 1.6GHz to then jump back to 4.4GHz.

Is this right? I'm not running any programs so why does it seem the CPU is running flat out?

It's an i3770k by the way.

Jeff. I shall do that but after I have established the reason for the CPU Z issue. Now CPU Z seems to show a core speeds of between 1.6 and 4.4 GHz in equal measures. This does not seem to tally with the task manager showing around 12% CPU usage. Strange as apart from CPU Z nothing else is running.

Ps what does enabling speed steps and c states do?

the c states are power saving features it will lower your clock speed when your cpu is idle

so your cpu speed drop to 1600mhz to 2400mhz when idle and boost it up when you need it

tbh think i misread the 1st post looks like you already have it enabled which is why it drops down then back up,as said above looks like you have something running thats using the cpu

Hmmmm. I've looked in the task manager and no program's are running. Theres obviously a load of processes running which don't look to be using massive CPU power. What about the task manager only showing 12% CPU usage when idle? My old Pc showed virtually nothing when idle.

Windows might be trying to update in the background ;) What uses the most CPU power?

Ok. System idle looks like it should be high. The CPU not being used. Using approx 13% CPU is a process called IAstorDataMgrSvc.exe*32

This seems to be the only process using CPU power when system is idle

Quick google relates to a Intel Driver for Storage/something along those lines.

as soon as there is any load on the core or a core it will ramp up to operational speed, if I look at my open monitor when something in the system is updating or I am browsing the net some cores will by higher than others. when I load BF3 all go to 4.7

Right. So the fact that it is showing 4.4GHz most of the time, coupled with the low temps when idle suggests it isn't being stressed like when prime95 is running and it shows 4.4GHz and much higher temps.
