Somewhere in the middle.
I bought a 27" 1440p monitor from MM and had full intentions of buying a geforce 670gtx to go with it.

However I held back on ordering one and decided to see how my 5850 would hold up.

To my surprise games like Bulletstorm, BF3, Batman and older engines like in Dota 2 and Left4dead have been very playable.

Battlefield 3 was fine but could maybe be a bit faster. The rest werent too bad.

So instead I bought myself a Logitech g510 keyboard and I am gonna save a bit money and maybe buy a new GFX Card next month instead.

Guess the lesson Ive learned is to try the games I actually play before blitzing 330 quid :D

If you're willing to sacrifice some settings the 5*** series of cards still hold up well. :)

Glad to hear your choice worked out.

just goes to prove once again that the latest graphics cards albeit being fast are just not necessary for the current crop of games.

5850 and the 5870 are still very usable in terms of gaming, only the Vram is starting to limit decent framerates on the largest monitors tbh, if you game at 1080P or lower, anything newer will only be better for a small handful of games :p

I like AMD's "now is the time to upgrade" when comparing the 58xx to 78xx.

But really the last two generations have been to the main advantage of notebooks.

5870M -> 6990M -> 7970M

has been more impressive than

5870 -> 6970 -> 7970

I've loved my 5850, wish I had bought two as I got this for under £90 and price vs. performance is the single best card I've owned in many years. I would pick up another but have really held their value and the cheapest I've seen is about £130-£150 for another which just isn't worth it really.

Is starting to suffer a bit with lots of eye-candy enabled but since I game at 1680x1050 it isn't too bad but am planning to get something new in the next month or so.

I had a 5770 then xfired it. Excellent cards and only upgraded because of the upgrade itch. Really wasn't warranted. could've lasted me a few more years I reckon....

I think I might get a new PC case to replace my old Eclipse, maybe a new PSU because my Tagan is ANCIENT, and then consider changing the card.

A big turn around because I was on the verge of buying a card this weekend.

Guess PC games havent really improved greatly since Crysis Warhead visually.

Even my HD4850 was faring quite well. Only in the past year or more have I needed to tweak the settings down to play games at a reasonable framerate.

Glad you are enjoying the monitor mate, Can I have it back now... :D

I honestly couldnt downsize from this now. I love the extra space :)
Its quite funny how these screens have buttons that dont do anything. The image quality is spot on though.

Glad I bought it off you :D

Superb stuff. I'm now using a pair of Dell 2412's 1920x1200 and they are great screens but the image quality is not a patch on the Pcbank.

Yeah just brightness and volume, I liked the simplicity Just a great screen with minimal interference from menus.

Enjoy....:D

Very happy HD5850 owner here, My card can run BF3 on high with ultra effects at 1080p AA off at 60FPS on singleplayer. Multiplayer sees 60fps indoors and around 45 outside on the B2K maps, others its higher. this is with a Stock 955BE and 4GB RAM. plays most of my games in my collection on high. the only games that suffer is Skyrim, COH but thats due to my CPU being ****.

EDIT, i got it from the overclockers sale last year for £100. If my Mobo was allows crossfire id be seeking out another.

+1 for the 5850!

I'm looking to upgrade though because the likes of Skyrim/Metro are not quite good enough, but could my CPU be the cause as well, i've got the 975BE at stock?

I did post on here a few weeks back with upgrade queries, but i don't want to end up getting a 7870 and it being no better.

Have to agree, I am still on my 5850 and it has been with me since Jan 2010 running everything at high graphics.

I was sure that I would need to upgrade for Battlefield 3 but didn't need to and I was also sure I would need to upgrade when I bought my Samsung 23" 3D monitor, but again it is handling everything just fine!

5800 series was and still is legendary in my opinion.

Definitely looking at a 7950 though for Planetside 2 :)

Interesting. Been thinking of going along the same lines and getting a 1440p monitor and new GPU but might just grab a screen for the time being. My overclocked GTX470 isn't tto far away from a 5850 performance and that little bit of extra VRAM my come in handy. Not fussed about reducing the settings in games like BF3 so might be OK.

Your gtx470 is faster, so you may well be ok. :)

Ive been playing TF2, BF3, DOTA, BulletStorm and Grid and all them games have been fine .

Battlefield lost some of the higher settings to keep a good framerate but it has certainly been very playable.

I helped install a new 670 in my mates PC this afternoon and we fired BF3 up on ultra at 1680x1050 (?) and it looked and ran superb.

It did make me kinda jealous but Ill hold back for now :)
