My PC doesn’t turn on.

A computer’s screen remains black after turning on the computer. The monitor is ok though. I can only hear the fans spin. I thought it may be the graphic card that went off so I unplugged the monitor cable from the GPU and connected it to the motherboard socket. Still the same, the PC doesn’t start up. Am I correct that if there was something wrong with the processor, or the SSD, there would be something on the screen, right?

So, would that be the motherboard that is faulty? Or maybe power supply?

I do have a spare motherboard I hope I could use to test it out but I was wondering if I could get any thoughts about other possible steps I could take before disassembling the whole rig.

Could be many things, it's worth posting your parts list including CPU, graphics card etc. If you have a non-G series Ryzen CPU then it doesn't have inbuilt graphics. The connection on your motherboard won't do anything.

Basic steps:

Does it power up? Fans will spin

Does it POST? You may get a beep or several, if there's an internal speaker

Etc, there are more steps to figure out exactly what's wrong depending on your symptoms and hardware.

Well, when I press power on button, it makes all the same sounds as when everything was working fine, namely, the fans of different components begin to spin at the top speed for a second and then they calm down to normal. Also, all the lights are on, including those on motherboard and graphics card. The only thing, the screen stays inactive, black. So, I am unable to enter BIOS. The monitor itself I believe works ok, when I turn it off and on, it displays its logo and little pop up about entering into power saving mode. So, at the moment, the only thing that I can see out of ordinary is that when the PCU is turned on, the screen doesn’t respond at all, everything else, the sounds, lights inside seem to be normal.

Here’s the specification:

GPU: Asus HD 7770 GHz TOP 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express

CPU: Intel Core i3-3220 3.30GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W)

PS: Corsair CX500

Motherboard: Asus p8h61-mx usb3

RAM: TeamGroup Elite 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TED38GM1600HC11DC01)

Have you tried another HDMI cable or tried to clear the bios?

Sorry for being inactive for 2 days, technically speaking it’s my mom’s computer and I can try to fix it only when I have the time. She didn’t notice anything out of ordinary lately, it just didn’t start up.

Last time when I was working on it, after I connected the monitor cable back to the GPU the PC run the BIOS. When I attempted to just tun the OS I got select a proper boot device and reboot error message.

Anyway, I had to leave at the time and now the PC again doesn’t display anything on the screen so, I can’t run the BIOS.

Also, the monitor and the PC are old, about 10 years, so there is DVI cable and I do have a spare one. I tried to use it to eliminate the possibility of a dead cable but it didn’t help, it’s definitely not a cable’s fault.

That sounds like the hard drive/ssd or the cable that connects to it might have failed to me.... or at least caused the bios to lose track of it. Doesn't explain no bios though which would help confirm the drive issue

So I'm going to suggest removing the cmos battery or even better replacing it with a new one (you might have a 'clear cmos' jumper as well), if nothing else it should reset the bios to default which will rule out a bios config issue.
