My PC went pop!

After moving into the new pad, I went to plug in my games server which had been in storage for 6 months and "POP" it went, not unlike bursting a balloon. My proper PC, monitor, router, etc all powered off too (same faceplate on wall) and I had a bit of a brown trouser moment!

After flicking the trip switch I tried all my cherished components (in sig, plus Billion 7402G router, was £100!) and found they were all OK. So I turned to my mighty server (Sempron 2.2GHz, 1Gb RAM :p ) and had a good look/smell to identify what had blown- I could see nothing. Thinking, "Great, now to try to identify what has broken, and possibly break new components putting them into this system....." I swapped my trusty Antec Tru Power 330W for the generic that came with the case (not a Q-Tec, I hope), and lo and behold it booted up sweet as a nut!

They knew how to make 'em in those days!

Point of this thread? Don't know, just though some might like to hear that sometimes a PC can survive a blown PS!

P.S. Then found out I've forgotten my password to get into Kubuntu, what a chump!

P.P.S Now I've an excuse to get a new power supply for my gaming rig and pass down my current Enermax 500w, heh.

I think you should try and not run everything from the same faceplate as you are putting a high strain on one point.

If the PSU is a good one usually you can survive it blowing without blowing up the rest of the puter.

I bought a new PSU once and never checked the in voltage and it was set to 110v so it went BAAAAANG when I plugged it in. Changed PSU and PC started up fine :)

Well people run 1000W hairdryers microwaves etc from one plate so I don't think that's an issue.

You can run up too 2.99kW (2990Watts) from a 'single' socket (13A x 230V) so unless you have one of the most power hungry computers in the world it's nothing to do with running it all off a single socket (WTF is a plate? Surely thats what you eat your dinner off :p )

Plate... I wanted to distuinguish between running all my PC bits from one point (I don't, it's two), there are two points on this particular face plate :p

I mentioned it because I thought if the shonky electrics in the new place are in the walls, maybe it fried my other PC too. Thank the Lord it didn't! It's a pain though as I've my new C2D kit to fit, and I can no longer make another PC out of my current bits until I get a new PS.

Actually though, just to confirm for anybody who searches for stuff like this, I've got the following kit connected:

PC1- OC'ed Opteron, OC'ed X1900XT
inkjet printer
5.1 speaker system
scanner (powered via USB from PC)
paper shredder
20" widescreen monitor

and to the other power point:

ADSL router
offending PC- OC'ed Sempron

maybe I should even those up a bit....

LOL, I did exactly the same thing once to, back in my very early days, I think it might even have been the first computer I ever built ! Anyway, you only make those type of mistakes once

You would think so but I worked with a guy who got his replacement power supply proceeded to blow it by forgetting to check the voltage again! Five years later he still hasn't lived it down. :D

Yes you can pull a lot out of one wall socket but daisy chaining power strips is usually bad as the strips aren't good enough to handle the load and it can cause them to fail and in worst case catch fire.

Heheh when I get a new PSU now I check it like 3 times before attaching the power to it. I mean the shock I got when it went bang in my face...I must have jumped 10 feet :)

If you can manage to do it twice....
