Not much to say about this one really.

I'll need something to trundle about in when my company car goes back in the new year, and the I don't want to bodge the Manta, it needs proper restoration work. Combined with the weather and all the panels being on back-order I wasn't going to have much time to faff about, so I decided to buy a cheap car.

Picked it up yesterday. It drives nicely, it's a 1.6 so not particularly quick, rides ok, handles decently enough, but it doesn't stop. At all. Not even with your foot welded to the floor and the handbrake on. This only happened halfway up the M5 so I coaxed it home and will investigate next weekend. I think the rear shoes are sticking and robbing me of a pedal, but I can't be certain.
Whatever it is won't be a big issue as I have a garage full of spares for these things, which is what made me buy one of these rather than a random Mondeo or whatever.

Here are a few pics. Trust me, the rain really flatters it. It's covered in dings, the automatic bonnet's had one coat of rattle can paint, it's got some rust on the roof and the usual inner wing seams but otherwise it's alright I suppose.

Plans? Not really. Sort the brakes, repair the intermittent fuel gauge (seems to work when it feels like it) and knock up something to secure the battery which is currently bouncing around under the bonnet. On and straighten the wonky wiper linkage.

The "pimp interior" is standard. The dangly door sill is a dangly sunroof inner seal, I hadn't actually noticed that, it must have come off in the night. I'll tack it back up with a touch of Tigerseal.

That interior is ace.

When you say the brakes don't work, are you being literal?
Pretty much - the pedal is at the end of it's travel and it just doesn't stop. You get an initial "grab" and very little else. If you can get down to a really low speed (20 or 30) the rears will eventually lock.

Started doing it half way home from Cornwall when I stopped for a wazz, made the rest of the journey interesting. Whatever it is won't be a big deal, I have a full set of new brake components in the shed.

How come it took you until getting on the M5 to realise the brakes weren't working? :p

They were working at first. They stopped working somewhere on the M5. The guy did tell me he'd had issues with the rears binding so I knew to expect trouble.

I don't get it. Why would you pick one of these over a cheap MK3 mondeo or something along those lines?

I don't really like new cars, I'd rather have a tatty example of one of the best hot hatches produced in the last 30 years. Plus I know them inside out.

Jealous!

my first car (had for 5 years) was a 205 1.4xs. Ridiculously quick for the engine size.

I am tempted to get another for a track car but with the 2.0l in.

Why did you not get a 1.9 btw? Just a much better package - rear discs for starters!

Sounds like your master cylinder seals are knackered...

Never been a fan of the 1.9 engine, too lazy. And an 800kg car doesn't really need discs at the rear (although they are definitely easier to maintain!)

Does with an mi16 in it ;)

And i thought they were a bit more than that? My XS was just over 800kg but lighter engine...

Out of interest do you have this on classic insurance?
