Hi all

So my wife has been playing a lot of PUBG lately and over the weekend the Ping has been ridiculous, as I sit here now next to her it's going upto 550ms at times and gets really Laggy...

We don't have ethernet cable so run a WiFi dingle but we've never had issues like this before, is there anything we could try?

When I open up task manager it says (Background processes 83) that seems like the PC is doing things it shouldn't whilst gaming

Any help appreciated

Thanks

You could mess around for ages and never fully solve that, WiFi has a tendancy to be pretty bad for gaming. You could try moving your PC closer to the router and stuff - but it's not likely to make much difference.

If you switch to cable - it'll most likely go away.

Yeah I had a feeling that would probably be the best answer/solution for this issue tbh... I'll order a cable and thread in to the router

Yeah, just get a cheap cat5e cable online for like £5, it should make quite a big difference. :)

Cable might not sort it if something else was going on with the network and there's no QoS on your router, provided you have good signal wifi should be fine for gaming, but if someone/something is downloading hard then latency spikes will occur even wired.

You mentioned background tasks Perhaps Windows was downloading an update?

I've noticed lately if the kids have their tablets on YouTube then lag can start but it's not always the case... My CPU is at 95% or more it's only a Ryzen 1200 so guessing that could be something holding the system back but don't think that will effect ping surely

Youtube can take quite a bit of bandwidth and depending on your setup with respect with wifi router and how much bandwidth you have this could be the reason for your issues, adding a LAN cable may help in that you won't be in Wifi contention with the tablets but if you only have 70Mb and youtube is trying to cache playback it will take that bandwidth and you will be reliant on how your router managed bandwith sharing, some are crap at that, I used to kill the internet in the house downloading on steam, it would take everything through the Sky hub unless I limited it, on my latest router I can set bandwidth maximums such that my TV and Sky box don't eat the lot and neither does the family when streaming but it is also a lot fairer at load balancing even without that set such that everybody gets something.

Overload CPU would just mean the game runs slow, not sure if that would impact pings.
