Well looks like now is a better time than ever to consider an upgrade.. the top scroll wheel appears to be broken. It scrolls but it doesn't click in either direction which means it doesn't function at all :( Not totally sure how this has happened but has had a fair amount of use (100k+ clicks).

I'm debating getting it repaired but at the same time a 7d is looking awfully tempting right now (around 700 used on TP seems like a bargain!)... has anyone had any experience of this issue before on the 40D, will I notice a big difference up to the 7d?? I find the main thing that limits me is the ISO, everything else I have loved about this camera and has served me well :)

Thanks!

Awesome post James J thank you :) Any more details about the AA filter, what kind of lighting details it it that screws with this?

I'm going to get the 40D looked at over the weekend, I live round the corner from a Canon repair centre and they can do quotes whilst you wait :D

Basically the fine detail in shadows is far worse when you try and recover it, meaning the exposure has to be right on the camera. This is obviously compared to other camera's, so in a real life setting (instead of just looking at sensor tech) its not the be all and end all. The 60D gives a sharper image compared to the 7D but the later has a far better AF system, so its 1 compromise vs another really.

It certainly sounds like it will be manageable... I guess it will be more of a case of changing the way I take pictures which is never a bad thing!

Think I would rather go for the 7D purely for the magnesium body, slightly less sharper images I can live with :)

Haha fiiine I'm convinced :p It's payday next Monday so will see what I can get :D woooo new camera time :D
