i lol at her, but then realise i don't know what's wrong with it either. her house seems to just suck for computers. she's running off a wireless network, and the network is fine, because i can take my or my gf's computer there and it picks it up. but mother dearest has a laptop and a computer upstairs and either plugged in, or wireless, she can't open web pages. the internet says it's an excellent connection, but pages don't open. now i'm sure this is IP related but i don't really know how to fix it. diagnostics says it's the DNS config but who knows how often the default program is right. any idea how to check and fix this? i thought plugging it in directly would help but it gets the same problem. her mobile anywhere dongle works just fine, cept it's damn slow.

What router has she got?

Does your lappy work ok when you pick up her wireless? If not, maybe worth heading into the routers config page and manually enter the DNS server; Google's 8.8.8.8 is an easy one to remember.

yeah, no problems picking up her wireless on ours. she's goooot...a pretty new linksys one, was about 50 quid. literally just hers that don't work on it.

If she's having problems getting an ip address on the network, have a google - There was an issue with the way Vista obtains IP's from the Linksys router at my parents house and It needs some registry changes to fix. My Win7, Ubuntu and XP machines worked fine, but all the Vista machines needed the reg fix.

edit: felt generous and googled it for you - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233

problem still going tbh. her laptop is vista, and she already has that patch thingy, and her pc is xp and both do the same thing. i don't really get why.

Wait I don't get it, does she have a wireless router and both of her PCs will use a wireless receivers to pick up the wifi or she's using another router to pick up the signal of the other main router ????

And your laptop/pc works fine using what, their own receivers?

If you open CMD and type:
ping 209.85.229.99

Do you get response?

Also try typing the following one after another like this:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew

Let me know if that works.

lol *i* use wires for everything. but she insists on wireless. a test tells me that the modem is fine and it's connected well, but the line between the internet and the modem isn't getting anything. which is crap, cuz i get internet on my stuff.

phoenix- the ping timed out every time. i did the ip commands and when i did the renew one, it wouldn't work as it couldn't do it while the media was disconnected

or something

I use wired on my desktop as I'm constantly moving large files across the network, as well as splitting the connection to my 360 as I'm too cheap to get a Wi-Fi adapter for it :p however Wifi is invaluably useful on my netbook when I just want to lounge around downstairs.

Anyhow I recall a similar Vista network problem, and I had to completely reset the TCP/IP settings via command line if I remember correctly.

Hmm that's incredibly strange. I can only suggest that you give the machines static IP's as previously suggested.
