My portrait skills suck!!!!

Paul do you post process? That last picture to me as a green cast to it which a dash of magenta would get get rid off, also if you improved contrast slightly using curves and maybe hit it with a slight sharpening it'll definately 'pop' more.

I adjusted the white balance to one of the white stripes on his top, I also applied the unsharp mask filter. I decide to leave the contrast alone for a change :p

I dont agree that your portrait skills suck.

The most important thing is that you criticise yourself and can immediately see areas that you think need to be improved (DOF/Shadow etc) so next time you take one, you'll be looking out for these things.

Actually you know I hadn't even noticed the green tint until you mentioned it! Shows my eyes aren't very good at detecting colour casts! Anyway slight adjustment (very slight s curve and a very slight magenta cast added)

Out of interest how can an image have a green cast? I thought pictures either had blue or yellow/orange casts?

I think that's your answer, that doesn't sound reliable.

I always set WB on-camera, though sometimes I find Photoshop's WB settings to be noticably different to my camera's equivalent WB settings (not better, but if it seems slightly off I'll try both). Shooting RAW naturally. Mixed light makes WB a nightmare.

As do I, I chose the shade preset as we were indoors with no artificial light, but it made it a bit too yellow, so I just used the set white point tool in lightroom. I guess I should have just adjusted the temperature myself.

Funny, I don't think I've ever gotten a decent result off the shade setting!
