My processor is reporting wrong speed :( + pic

My processor is reporting the wrong speed for my processor. Does anyone know why this is happening? This problem was also occuring when my processor was on my old mobo. (I am currently using a GA-8N-SLi Quad Royal)

3.6Ghz reporting as 2.8Ghz


Even though I'm going to upgrade my processor next week (if Gibbo's offer for the 3.4Ghz dual-core stays there till the 25th @£252 inc vat) I would like my current processor to report normally so that I can use this on a secondary computer.

Anyone have any ideas how to correct this problem?

Its just the intel Speedstep, drops the voltage and the multiplier to 14, as soon as you put the cpu under load it should go to its full speed.

So you mean I should run loads of apps at the same time to force the processor to report higher? Or do I force overclock the CPU to the normal level?

Hehe, even though Intel's site says it hasn't got speed step the article said it has, and what's the most funniest part of it all is this:

On the plus side, with the CPU at 2.8 GHz, we were able to overclock to much higher front side bus speeds. Our 3.6 GHz / 800 MHz FSB (18 x 200) chip was able to overclock to 3.5 GHz / 1000 MHz FSB (14 x 250), and was able to push much better numbers in terms of gaming and memory performance. We were also able to push our chip up to 4.0 GHz with ease, but our benchmark numbers looked terrible. It looks as if Prescott's thermal throttling feature was kicking in, big time.

So does it means this cpu-lock thing is a blessing in disguise?

I'm going to go mess around in my BIOS and try and get the same numbers they're getting.

You're spot on Orifice, once I ran Super PI it seemed my processor speed picked up..shame my tweaks in the BIOS didn't stick...it seems to load into system safe mode.

Think the multi thing only works on a few select boards. Odd that intel say the 560 doesnt have speedstep on their own website.

I saw in the BIOS that C1 CPU locking is enabled (or something along that line) which will reduce the cpu speed. When I applied the "turbo" settings, I just can't get my mobo to load without jumping into system safe mode

I will keep trying!!
