I'm trying to install the x64 version of windows 8.1 I currently have 32 bit version installed. So when it came to enter product key to activate windows before install I entered my key I got with my digital order and of course it says it doesn't work. Any ideas?

I'm trying to install using a place holder key now, whatever that is? Then when in windows change key to mine and activate but I'm afraid it won't work?

No go. : ( im beginning to hate windows now. I think its because my windows was upgraded form win 7, so im unable to do a clean install. Looks like im stuck on 32 bit.

Does anyone know if i install a windows 7 64 bit iso, then windows 8 over the top it will let me use my key?

Providing you install and activate Windows 7 and then install an upgrade copy of Windows 8 (using an upgrade key) it should activate.

It's windows 8 pro, someone told me you can't use a windows 8 pro key for windows 8.1 is this correct?

You cant "upgrade" between architectures :(

Is it an upgrade key or oem key?

You can't download and upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit using same key? Why? That's bit harsh. Not sure if it's upgrade or oem. It was the Microsoft offer for £25 way back when it was first launched my receipt says....

I blanked a few things. I got a real bargain cos I got £10 off that and got it for £15. I just installed over the top of my dodgy copy of windows 7 at the time.

I have the same type of key.

I downloaded the 8.1 pro iso from somewhere. Then installed Windows using the generic 8.1 key. Once Windows was on there, I used my 8 key to activate it.

Loads of others have used the same method.

Do you have the generic key I can use please. : )
Jimbo, all the questions you're asking have already been answered loads of times here if you took the trouble to search.

You can use the same key for either a 32-bit or 64-bit version of the same product; you just can't perform an in-place upgrade from a 32-bit to 64-bit architecture. It has to be a clean install.

Lol I'm such a dork. Sorry. Thank you my placeholder key is working fine now and I'm doing a clean install. Wish me luck haha

It is annoying that MS don't allow your normal w8 keys during install. They should just embed the generic key.

Yes works great. Accepted my key and I'm all activated on 64 bit os. Bit of a faff but I'm there. Thank you all kindly : )
