Hi all i'd really a appreciate a brief moment of your time to see what you think of my proposed spec i'm thinking or ordering v soon! :)

CPU: C2D E6300

MOBO: Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2

RAM: OCZ 2GB PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC 4,4,4,15
or
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency 4,4,4,12

GPU: BFG 8800GTS 320MB

HSF: Tuniq tower + HR-05 NB cooler

PSU: Hiper Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU Black UV


I really want to get an OC of at least 3.0Ghz on the E6300 so hope those parts are up to it.

Main worries are V-droop on the Asus board, had it on my P4 one and it was really annoying!

And does anyone know if the tuniq tower and 8800GTS fits inside my Tsunami Dream case?

Change the PSU mate, I would only advise because of the amount of Hipers I have seen reported blowing up or having problems. I would replace it. I just fitted a Noctua NH-U12F to my C2D the temperatures are amazing, I would recommend that cooler :) The 8800 is around 9" the size of a standard envelope and similar size to a X1950.

Other than that, excellent choices. Either RAM is decent. I have the GeIL and its very good.

i've heard rumours of the Hiper's blowing up, its a shame cos for a PSU it looks awesome:(

Yeah thats right, loads of them have been blowing and other problems have also been reported. You may well be fine but I wouldnt take that risk, invest in reliability. If you are on a tight budget go for an Akasa PSU.

Have a look here - http://www.techspot.com/news/24385-8900-series-GeForce-to-cost-550600.html it mentions the 8900 will be around the £250-£300 mark.

Having said that I really don't wanna buy a 320MB 8800GTS now for £200 only to have it pwned in 3-4 weeks.

What do you mean here? The 8800 should last you a long time, plus you can now get them for around £180 now.
 
It's not a rumour. There's been loads failing/blowing up, mine included. Some of us has lost other components with it.

Buy a decent psu. Yes, it will cost more, but the psu is one area that you should'nt skimp on.
 
In reference to the CPU, I would read this, posted by "WJA96" when I asked about processors.

I believe you need to look at all the components to get one whole overclock.

1. The motherboard - lower multipliers require high FSBs. Intel P965 chipset boards do very well here, but beware the strap-changes that often seem to happen that makes CPUs running between 400 and 455FSB run slower than ones running under 400FSB!

2. The RAM - Many boards require the RAM to run at a fixed ratio. This quite often means that PC6400 RAM is the minimum and to optimally overclock a low multiplier CPU, you need really good RAM. Expensive RAM.

3. The cooling - high FSBs place big demands on all the chipset components so the cooling of the NB and SB can be critical to getting a stable overclock. All the newer Intel chips all seem to suffer significantly higher core temperatures than the very early ones, although the reason for this is unclear, it is definitely the case that many have concave Integrated Heat Shields (IHS) and some have poor contact between the cores and the IHS. E4300 CPUs also seem to need lots of volts to get them overclocking above 3GHz so CPU cooling is a factor too.

4. The CPU

For this, I think you need to set a target value you want to overclock to. I like to pick 3.2GHz, because it suits my argument. I make no bones about that, and I welcome the opportunity to discuss my logic.

E6300 with 7x Multiplier requires FSB of 457 to reach 3.2GHz. Sp PC6400 RAM will also be overclocked and PC8000 RAM is required to guarantee the RAM will match the CPU capabilities. A voltage increment will almost certainly be required to get to 3.2GHz.

E6400 with 8x Multiplier requires only 400FSB to reach 3.2GHz. PC6400 RAM is not required to be overclocked, so the potential to go further is also there. A voltage increment might be required. Some E6400's don't need a voltage increase to get to 400FSB.

E6600 with 9x Multiplier requires a mere 356 FSB to get to 3.2GHz so the PC6400 is actually underclocked at that speed. Generally, E6600's will do 356FSB on stock volts, or just a little over stock volts.

At this point the E6300 will be the system producing the most heat and require the greatest cooling. The E6400 will also need good cooling, but less so. The E6600 is probably running quite cool.

Now, if you throw in the E4300 then it should enjoy the same low FSB advantage of the E6600, but it's starting from a lot further back and it needs lots of volts to get there. It produces lots of heat and therefore needs loads of cooling.

I think the sweet-spot is the E6400 as it offers a near-guaranteed 3.2GHz with ordinary PC6400 RAM, has a little more available headroom than the E6300 to go beyond 3.2GHz and it only costs £25 more.

I am totally convinced the corsair 520W is the PSU for me, amazing ratings and build quality:) enough power considering I won't go SLI, modular too I believe?

yes I really want to build now that I am at home away from uni, better to be relaxed and take your time. 8800 will be amazing for ages, up from a 6800GE!

My only concern now is i'm having trouble finding out if the tuniq tower hits the Tsunami Dream's side intake fan. Its a roomy case and frankly think the manufacturers have failed if it can't fit it. I like to sort out good cooling first time round.

PS: Abyss that's very interesting info, i've been catching up on C2D since my P4 days lol and thats the first time its all made sense....I'll see how an E6400 affects budget...by £25 more I should imagine!

r3dbull i've given it a good go re the tuniq + tsunami can can't find a definitive answer which is a shame as it was always my cooler of choice.
I think it maybe does not fit as a chap on another forum said it didn't work for him. :(

At this stage i'm thinking scythe ninja, lapped perhaps (lapping virgin) will still be a very effectice cooler and actually fit!
Should clear an HR-05 NB cooler too from pics around the net.

What can I fit to the SB? Anything on the ocuk site?

I think i'm gonan opt for the 640mb BFG, I don't upgrade with every new generation so 640mb will give me some headroom should textures increase

Just bought similar spec setup my self
I opted for
Asus PN5-E motherbaord
OCZ ram
E4300
OCZ power supply
BFG 8800 GTS OC 320mb
Ninja cooler

Currently running at 3.2ghz no probs at 1.4v idle temp around 30 load around 55c

guys this is polystyrene 153mm long, resting on the mobo itself, tuniq tower is ~ 150-155mm in height, If I can find a low profile 92mm intake fan I should be good to go for a TT120:) what you think?
