My proposed P35 + E6600 setup

Hi All

I'm thinking of purchasing the following setup:

OS: Vista Ultimate 64 bit
MOBO: Gigabyte GA_P35_DQ6 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
MEMORY: PC2-9200 1150MHz Reaper HPC Edition Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2RPR11502GK)
COOLER: Zalman CNPS9700-LED Aero Flower (Socket AM2/939/754/775) CPU Cooler
CASE: Antect P182
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
VIDEO: BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3
PSU: Enermax Infiniti 720W EIN720AWT ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU

Ideally I'd like to get this system up to 3.45ghz with an FSB of 575mhz (x6) . That should be achievable on a 1:1 with the reaper memory but is my FSB ambition to high?
Would you recommend changing any of components? Should I be striving for a higher FSB? I'm hoping that reaper memory should do up to 700mhz :eek:

I really wanted to get one ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT and then add another later when I needed it (this board supports Crossfire) but it seems like the 2900 XT is a dud. Should I still go with ATi and hope that driver updates fix the performance? I know the one 2900 XT won't compete with a GeForce GTX 8800 but 2 in Crossfire should beat it. I'm a bit worried about the heat the 2900 XTs seem to generate.
 
Tbh honest we haven't seen enough of the P35 DQ6 to know if it'll hit 575mhz easily.

Not for years ;). However, you probably misinterpreted what I wrote...I meant the memory should be able to handle 575mhz (1150) no problem but will the FSB go as high as 575? (providing the CPU can handle 3.45 but let's just assume it can for the moment ) :D

In this article the reviewer gets a FSB of 575 on stock voltages (although he is running an X6800 with water cooling (only on the CPU though)). Now I thought the FSB limitation was caused by the motherboard (northbridge, southbridge and memory).

I'm still learning as I go so pull me up if I'm stating anything wrong

It's usually limited by the board, but sometimes the CPU will hit a FSB wall first.

The P35's are looking like they'll reach high FSBs, but we're not sure if the reviewers are using cheery-picked boards or if ~600mhz will be the norm.
 
Well I'll see how I go with this board. I don't want to mess around with voltages too much.

Have you any comments on the card selection? (ie, go with the 8800 over the 2900 XT)
 
Chane the CPU cooler to either:

Tuniq Tower
Scythe Ninja Rev B
Thermalright Ultra 120

The 9700 isn't s good as these by far.

RM Special Delivery takes ~24-48 hours, depending on when it's posted.

City Link are usually the next day if you order before 3pm.

I normally use SD because it's a fair bit cheaper and I don't have to wait in all day for the City Link driver. And they're based at Aldergrove, so it's not usually a case of being able to pick it up at the depot. Tho if it's a big item you may not have any choice other than to go for City Link, as will probably be the case for your selection.
 
if you want to learn to overclock without damaging your precious new processor, buy a intel celeron and install it in an old system, i bought a celeron off ebay for £3 :D, and tested overclocking on an old system, but when i did my core duo i had a friend at hand to help me.

Seconded! I have the 9700 and it's noisy + doesn't cool that well. Watercooling this week hopefully :)

Also not sure how well the p182 will fit an 8800GTX, might be worth getting a bigger case? I've just had a p182 recently and it's nicely organised but not all that big..

Thanks for the headsup on the 9700 guys. I think I'll move to the Thermalright 120 with a good fan. I remember reading about a good 120mm fan that runs quitely...Anyone have reccomendations on this? It looks as though overclockers.co.uk is out of the Thermalright 120 though stock though:

:confused: You can't even buy them..But it looks as though the 120 Extreme is now available :)

The 8800 GTX should be able to fit in the P182 if you remove the middle harddrive cage which is fine as there is another cage at the bottom of the case :)

Ah. In that case I haven't a clue. Royal Mail are probably an extra day at the most. I haven't a notion about City Link. Do City Link deliver to Eire?
 
Get the Extreme then, it has thicker heatpipes and more fins I think.

As for a fan, get a Yate loon fan on them, OcUK don't stock these though but they are available from the UK - we just can't say where.

Don't how ever go for a noctua fan, they push air and are quiet but when used on a high back pressure grill/heatsink (which the Extreme would be with all its fins) then they don't cool very well. :)

Scythe S-FLEX 1600RPM Ultra Quiet 120mm Fan - 3/4 pin

Anandtech rate this highly as it's a good combo between performance and sound reduction. :)
