My PS2 turned into a disc eater :(

My first PS2 (which I bought s/h from a friend) stopped working altogether about two months after I got it, so I bought a s/h silver model from a local shop. It was working fine for like 3 weeks, but now during loading times theres usually a loud clicking noise and several of my discs have been scratched up.

Is this a common known issue with the console? I want to get another, but I don't want to throw money down the drain as it seems I've done so far. :/

Tempted to buy a brand new 'slim', but are they prone to failures/disc eating too?

Seems to me PS2 = great games, but horrible hardware.

I'm not sure if they all do it but I had to have 2 replacement PS2's because they both had a problem with the GPU. My third PS2 would only play certain games, it seemed to me that it wouldn't play the older platinums that had the purple color discs instead of the standard shiny color, I'd put the disk in and the PS2 would just grind the disk until I took it out, the same happened with any PS1 game that I would try and play in them. I think the newest model of slims are okay though, if you can pick one up cheaply then I guess it's worth a punt.

My original console (from when it was first released) worked until like 05 0r 06, but then fell over, so I bought a slim.

It died 'cause the laser wouldn't read stuff so well any more! :p

This was a common problem with older PS2 hardware. Purple coloured discs are infact games on cd rather than dvd. Thats also why the ps1 games aren't working. I believe at the time Sony would repair your PS2 if it suffered this problem.

I have a load of shmups that are on the purple discs that only work in my ps2 slim and not my original.
 
my original launch ps2, is still working, its got to be over 10 years old. its also been hammered, i used to play it solid in my teens, like 12 hours at a time. the only thing that looks to be going on it is the fan, which is louder than what it used to be. either that or there is a lot of dust inside it now and its overheating and the fan is compensating. still plays games fine.

i have 2 ps2's sitting here, 1 silver and 1 launch. if you want i could do a deal for both of them? email in trust. also have about 20-30 games too

/\ Cheers but I've already picked up another s/h PS2. Hopefully the previous two failures were just bad luck and this one will last longer. If not I'll mail you when smoke starts coming out of it. :D

Wow, I wish I knew that at the time! I haven't been able to play Tekken Tag Tournament for about 9 years. :(

I might try and pick up a cheap slim PS2, brand new they seem to be fairly pricey for what they are but I guess it's much cheaper than getting a 60GB PS3. My only problem is that I'm guessing most of the PS2 games are going to look like ass running through a SCART, and after years of being spoiled by top notch graphics and sound I don't know if I'll be able to put up with it! :o

Use an RGB SCART cable and it's not bad at all really. Obviously not close to the clarity of HD but still more than acceptable and far better than normal composite/SCART. I played through MGS2 and 3 last year on my PS2 connected to my 26" Samsung HDTV via RGB SCART, and after getting the picture nicely centred, the visuals were fine really. You stop noticing after a short while anyway.

I was surprised at the price when i bought my Slim PS2 a while back. I would say though that the PS2 is one of the best Consoles ever made, and as I love RPG's it was a no brainer to buy one :D
