My 3 year old son has decided to use my ps3 as a moneybox and now the blu-ray drive does not work.

Has anyone had a similar issue and taken it apart to fix?

I don't have any issues trouble shooting PC hardware but never opened up my PS3 before.

Slim model

It is out of warrenty.

Thanks

They come apart easy once you know how :) Plenty of guides about! The blu-ray drive will be removable so you can take it apart of just try and tip the money out :D

Thats ok I laughed myself.

I went to put a disc in and it just made this horrible noise. So I asked him, have you put anything in here.

He just said "yeah I put my money in there"

Annoying but these things happen.

at least you found out when you did, would hate to think how he would have tried to get the money out

I will have to give it a go. I can use it for downloaded games at the moment so I have been putting it off for now. If I do take it apart is there anything I should be careful of to mess it up further?

On the fat PS3 on of the kids put the VM viewing card in the drive. No TV and no PS3 until I found a guide how to open it up. Moved the STB away from the PS3 after that.

Have had a few coins in the slim. It's easier to open than the fat and an excuse to clean out the dust.

On the fat the first time I opened the drive cogs and springs jumped out in all directions, had to playback a YouTube clip dozens of times to try and make out how to put it all together. Thankfully that didn't happen with the slim's drive.

Should be pretty simple really. Have opened and replaced a couple lasers in the old fat models.

Get yourself a precision screwdriver set and do a search on YouTube for laser replacement in the slim, should be fine :)

Ok so if its the laser, where do i get a new one?

Would it be easier to just get it repaired by sony?

The laser is more than likely fine, it's probs some money stopping the drive mech from working. The guide for changing the laser will tell you how to open the ps3 then remove the drive and open the drive (remove coins) then follow the guid to put it all back again. :)

ok thanks. Will give it a shot. Hopefully its a £2 coin ;)

my daughter did exactly the same thing but i was lucky, as i ejected the disk about a mm of the card came on display so i managed to get it out with some tweezers

luckily never had it happened again but im sure once the youngest gets on the move ill be looking into some sort of protection

Also had luck. Took it to work and take a part watching youtube vid. Took out the drive and when I removed the magnetic bit that holds in the disc there was a coin stuck to it.

It was a flattened coin from Newquay Zoo. Put it all back together and after a minor hic cup where i accidentally unplugged the drive. Powered up and works fine.

Thanks for advice and support guys!
