My PSU blew up...

Powercool 550w modular, stay away! As I should have.

I knew it was too cheap for a modular PSU, but thought i'd try my luck.

Used this for just over three weeks, with the hardware in my signature, and it blew up last night whilst flying in FSX! Yes, it was overclocked via turbocore, but it had been since build completion. It blew up with one loud pop followed by one small pop, PC instantly turned off to hope nothing died with it.

Will be contacting the seller (ebay shop) tomorrow about a refund or replacement - they better give me one!!

I also want to ask, what entitlements, if any, do I have if the PSU damaged any other components when it went? Can I seek compensation from the store or manufacturer? Is there a way to determine which components if any were damaged? Hopefully it will all be ok, i'm not made of money :( Please reply with any advice or anecdotes of similar stories, but for the love of god, please don't rub it in!

Will update with how I get on with the sellers in the morning.

Ask for refund, don't put the same make/model back in !!!!!!

Look at the xfx psu's they are cheap for the quality, chances are you won't get any compensation for other components that were damaged due to failing psu

Please don't get another one

I definitely will not. I will demand a refund, thinking about it. Annoying thing is i was going to go with the XFX 550w but really wanted modular on a budget :(

Put the extra its worth it,5 year warranty with xfx id go for one of those, hope ur other bits survived, might need to clear cmos/remove battery when u get new psu

I have an XFX modular 750w PSU and its brilliant. Its really quiet as well.

It cost me about £80 I think from OcUK something around that price anyway.

I really hope so too. I dont make a lot of money and just bought the 6850 to finish the rig, i simpoly can't afford to start another build. I cant believe the manufacturer will not be liable for any damaged components...Is there any way to tell if a gfx card or mobo etc is fried before I get a new PSU?

You won't know,I wouldn't mess, just save for an xfx and you'll know when you power it up,if mb lights up/fans spin but no display, leave mb battery out for 30mins then try

I can't see u getting anywhere on damaged components esp buying off ebay

Unfortunately the only way is by testing the system with another power supply. Any friends/relatives you could ask to borrow one from?

I'm not keen on ocz psu's either, sorry,I'd choose xfx cos they are made by seasonic for xfx, corsair are decent too

watch out for "Ticking" noise problems with the XFX's..
Was unlucky and bought one with this problem.

Retailer wouldn't accept it was a fault despite Manufacturer saying noise indicates a problem.
Not sure I'd be looking at an XFX..
bad RMA experience from another Seller left me "£15+vat" out of pocket for it being collected.

I'm replacing the XFX with another brand, asked about ideas in this thread:

Could have been fan catching on the fan grill?

Buy from reputable retailer and you should be fine, could go corsair? Their rma service is excellent

Considering the amount of posts i have read lately about bad experiences and problems with xfx psu`s, i would`nt knock them. Nor would i knock other branded Psus. The possibility of getting a defective psu is always likely with any brand.
Most choices come from personnel experience of one type or another. I still have an OCZ ModXstream 600W and its still going strong and it`s very quiet.

I'll probably go with the Corsair builder series, but will give it some thought. Looks like i'll be without a system again for at least a week! ugh and unfortunately i dont know anybody who could lend me a PSU to test, nevermind one with the required 24 and 8 pin connections.

Thanks for all of the replies guys. Cross your fingers for me!

Going to eBay was your first mistake. I hope you do get your refund.

Well luckily it was from a real 'bricks and mortar' shop but their ebay channel, so i know i'm dealing with a company and their reputation. I'll call them tomorrow and i'm sure everything will get sorted. If not, Paypal/ebay will surely be on my side.

Will be buying from OcUK next time though!
