I got my Q6600 this morning, unfortunately I wont be building the PC till xmas as its a present from my better half, however I was wondering if anyone has experience with batch L740A761 given I cant OC it myself for another month?

Also I notice the heat spreader has marks on it, is that normal for a new OEM chip - Not bought from OCUK I should add as I had to bundle it up with other gear :(

Emlyn_Dewar - Cheers, that's put my mind at rest!

siege2 - I had wondered about that aspect, maybe a good bargaining chip with the wife :D Although shouldn't the normal RMA rules still apply? i.e return the item if its fault and get a new one in its place so long as its still under the minimum 12 month warranty?

a fine plan, but blown out the water by my current opty 165/939 system lol. I'm building a whole new system on the 27th (away for xmas...gah!)

Vir - no offence taken, the whole rma aspect wasn't something I even considered tbh. As for price, I think I got a pretty decent deal ;)

With regard to the marks on the HSF, I got this response to my query with the supplier (again this is NOT OCUK).

Further to the e-mail I can confirm that as Intel do not ship OEM CPU's directly for sale to end users it is entirely possible that these CPU's have been installed into a machine, these machines could then have been sold on to a third party and broken down and sold off as parts. This is why the CPU IHS may have marks that come from an HSF.

This I find very worrying!

oh yes this is one of the big etailors.

Ordinarily I only buy from OCUK and discussing such things as this on their forums I feel not to good about :(

I'd found 2 of the 3 threads there Emlyn, and one thing I do notice is that they are all quite recent, all in November in fact, so maybe its just a new phenomenon....runs for tin foil hat :D

OK I'll not worry too much lol, but being told that they may well have been installed into systems and then broken into parts doesn't sound great does it?

I'm still in two minds about sending it back simply because of the response I received from the supplier regarding the fact it could be from a computer broken down for parts.

I thought I'd post a pic of the IHS, the bit that concerns me is the horizontal line runnign above the intel text.

Cheers siege :D

Don't get me wrong here guys, it wasn't so much cheaper than OCUK, actually only a few quid, and from what should be a reputable retailer. Had I not being buying other items to build an entire new rig which cumulatively saved a few quid I would have stuck with OCUK, moral here is stick with the suppliers you know and have had good service from in the past.

thats fine if it does but it will be in sealed retail box from intel, so any marks will be from Intel themselves. I'm not doubting what everyone is saying about cpu's bearing marks but this is heavily marked and as far as i'm concerned has been in a pc before. Add to that the suppliers admission "it is entirely possible that these CPU's have been installed into a machine" means I'm not entirely at peace in beliveing this chip is fresh from the factory.
