WTF is going on guys.

I am getting really abnormaly high temps on my Q6600 (G0 I think)

I checked my (stock) heatsink, and noticed it was not on correctly. It is now.

Then I checked the temps again.
No change.

Look...

yes this is idle...

i have a nvidia coolermaster stacker 830
would that matter?

and yeh the thermal stuff is on the heatsink.

I was playing games and it said the temps were 120! that can't be correct?

It should shut down at ~100c.

The CoreTemp reading must be dodgy. Try the latest version (v0.96.1).

something is weird, even your clocks are wrong.

unless you have speedstep enabled. looks like it,

i would take the heatsink off asap and scrape that thermal stuff off and use some as5 then reseat and recheck.

its been like this for ages...

Dunno whats up.

I'll try the lastest version of coretemp

edit- newest version does nothing different

Make sure your heatsink is properly mounted and as silly as it sounds, make sure the fan is running. Those temps are really high, especially considering it either seems to be using speedstep or perhaps even throttling...

I really dont know whats going on.

The heatsink fitted properly before.
It is now.

The fan is running I just had a look.
Also touched the heatsink and it is really cold, considering my average temp is 75 right now...

A bit from my temp log from while playing counter strike source

If Heatsink Base and CPU IHS are not very flat the thin layer of stock TIM wont have good enough contact, only you can see this by removing it and looking at imprint.

im certain the actual fan isnt making contact with the cpu. ive used a q6600 on stock cooler, and they never, ever got that hot. check and recheck it. then check it again. the stock thermal paste is not to blame tbh.

make sure all 4 clips are in properly. cant stress that enough (but dont break the mobo trying to fit them!)

man ppl make way too big a deal over TIM, you can use toothpaste and get decent temps if you're mounted properly.

using the default thermal pad/gunk won't raise temps 60c ROFL

i'd say 99% OP hasn't got the stock cooler mounted properly, sometimes those pins look in place on a quick glance but they actually aren't.

It may do if the OP has taken the HS off and then placed it back down again. The thermal pad should have been replaced if the HS was removed. Which from reading the OP remarks again, sounds quite possible.

I'd say take the HS off, clean it up, AS5 and re-fit.

Also though, looking at those temps it may be software related (BIOS related) saying as it's cold to the touch yet apparently running at +80ºC. lol.

I have to agree.

Stock paste to AS5 isn't going to drop temps back to normal. The fan is definitely not mounted properly, with no contact between the IHS and the Heatsink, or some other explanation. Might be RMA time if the IHS isn't making contact with the die.

Definitely a concern. :(

With temp that high it has to be very concaved/convexed IHS/heatsink or it's just not installed properly.

You have to push the pins all the way down into mobo until you hear "clicks".
