My QX9650, How fast compared to i7 range?

Hello, happy boxn' day:)

Got an Extreme Quad QX9650, currently clocked at 3.5 (all air; on Tuniq tower And "Stepping"). Was just wondering, with all the i7 Hype et al, how my CPU ranks amongst the new breeds?. Seen some benchmarks, not many though. For example, is a i7 920 faster (in apps as a whole) than my CPU - with both of them at stock settings?.

Rest of spec is SLI GTX8800 (18,400 in 06, 12,250 in vantage, with 3.5 GHZ, but "Cards @stock" Got This Samsung 26" @1920x1200. Was just curious really, with all these new I7's leapfrogging over my "old" CPU:mad::(

TIA;)

You can probably run your 9650 at 4Ghz, I had no trouble at all reaching it on V1.3, and DJ switch runs his even higher than that, all on air.

I settled for now on 4.0, stepping, and it's bloody fast and stays amazingly cool (idle high 20s) :D

FYI I can run my non-extreme at 3.6 on stock voltage easily, these are amazing cpus !

Anything that is heavily multithreaded will see substantial boosts from the Core i7 architecture, so that means, encoding and rendering type tasks; we're talking 30-40% and possibly more in the future.

Single threaded apps will see a smaller increases. Gaming performance can vary depending on how they use the cores; i'm guessing older games will see very little difference, whereas newer games will make much better use of the Core i7 architecture.

Also, from what I've heard, the Core i7 is easier to overclock.

I myself was considering the i7 but since I mostly play games on my PC and the the cost of X58 motheboards and DDR3 memory is rediculously high at the moment, I stuck with a Core 2 Quad system, which to be fair is still very fast.

Thanks. Yes, these MOBO's aren't cheap - and then there's the ram to add to the price of the CPU.

Well, I read on one Forum, (not sure which now) that the opposite was true, and (I quote) "that the I7's get very hot, with very little 3rd party support for coolers.

Extreme Quad QX9650 does hold the world record for overclocking...I would push it further and wait for the i7 to drop in price.

I have my QX9650 overclocked to 3,800mhz. Runs everything i want just fine. Can clock it to 4,200mhz on air but it starts getting hot and can be unstable. Im also thinking i should sell this chip in the new year when they still sell for a good price. Then go and get an I7.

Well,

Looking at some reviews, I get the idea now i think, that the I7 series are much faster for encoding/studio etc etc, BUT NOT for gaming. Looking at reviews, there was little if any difference in performance at high resollusions. And let's face it, who's going to be playing FarCry2 with minimum details @ 800x600?.

Talking of Far cry2 - well, it doesn't like the i7 chips at all according to these tests here on Bit-Tech:

Quote from site:

"""""Our Far Cry 2 numbers offer surprising results to say the least. We checked and double checked these numbers and even upgraded to using the latest Nvidia 180.43 drivers (which are the results shown above) but it made no differenceIt seems that the Far Cry 2 engine just doesn't like the Core i7 architecture as much as it likes the previous generation Penryns, as they are a lot faster. Even the significantly cheaper Q6700, E8500 and AMD hardware outperform the Core i7s that all sit at the bottom of the table.""""" unquote

Was just wondering if there may be a similar trend in future games that do - or don't like i7 architechture? - acting like a "CPU version" of SLI/X-FIRE.....

Those farcry 2 benchies look wrong....

Looking at some other benchies Core i7 still ahead anyhow

Core i7 is still very efficent it does use similar power to the core2s in idle but yeah uses bit more juice during gaming/3d otherwise considering its tech its still the top end stuff, proberly dont see the Phenom 2 catching its performance judging from hardocp/others early benchies but for price point it would win easily:)

Its not worth going to i7 until the 32nm versions come out later next year, unless you're building a new system from scratch that it. If you must upgrade, stick with C2D for the next 12 months then take the plunge as there will be much better i7 chips with more cores later on next year.

And the following year the next new range of chips so wait but then the year after that the next new range of chips so wait for that but then the next year another new range of chips...(infinity)

If you are getting a new system i7 920 based one is the best you get with it overclocking.

Check reviews with other games and it has no problems.

when the new 32nm chips come out will they use the same socket?

Yes the 32nm will be on the same socket (I guess we are talking LGA1366 here) but it is unclear if current 1366 boards will support 32nm chips it may be the case that a revision is required.

No point waiting tbh, there is always something faster/better/cheaper months after the initial release, Just enjoy it then cu bit later on Members Market.
