My Rally Project

Blimey, forgot about this, you've been at this for ages now, been there and done that :) (and now doing it again...) You really need to get some gas and a reg, gasless is handy but as you've found out, bird poo city. Autosprint Birmingham will do your flywheel at a good price.

Yeah, I got caught up with life and moving from Wales to England and the poor old 205 just got garaged up and put into hibernation :)

Lopez, sorry if you've already done this elsewhere but could you post a few links on the types of event you're planning to attend?
I'm curious and I think a lot of guys here would find events like these temptingly affordable too.
Ta.

Missed this, sorry - will come back to it in a mo'

Tonight I decided to experiment with paint!

So, from left to right:
Super high build 2K primer
2K activator
Measuring cup
Apollo Spraymate electric HVLP system

Out of shot is a lovely container of 2K thinner

2K is reputedly nasty stuff. So, I am using a disposable mask and overalls, and vinyl gloves. Some say that's not enough and you should use a full air fed mask but I'm taking my chances

On it goes. Just the front panel as a tester, which is why it isn't properly masked up. I just wanted to see if the gun worked, which it does.

I'm getting better but still need plenty of practice. It's not so much the painting as getting the mix right. 2:1:1 (Paint/Activator/Thinner) leaves it a bit runny, but if you skip the thinner it doesn't spray very well and comes out spattery. I think 2:1:A splash of thinner seems to work well with the primer but I'll keep trying until I get it right.

Sweet.

If my girlfriends engine ever dies in the 1.6 205 gti I'm stripping it, caging it and fitting a mi16 haha... oh she doesn't know this yet.

Nice. So whats the 2k like to spray compared to the alternatives? Want to experiment with a bit of spraying at some point.

any more info on the road rallys lopez ?

was discussing amateur motorsport with a mate. He's seriously considering buying a 2k stripped out track day toy (like a 205 GTI) and taking it some amateur motorsport events. I suggested road rallys, but as far as im aware they're on the UK roads arent they ? so no actual rallying per se, and theres no official timing if i remember your previous posts

This is how I understand it, so might not be too accurate.

The rallys are split into parts, and the idea is to reach the next checkpoint at the alloted time. The times are calculated to average 30mph over that leg. That doesn't sound quick, but when you include time to calculate the route, and slowing down for slow bends, you end up going rather quick. If you finish slower than the alloted time, you recieve penalties, but come in too soon and recieve a harsher penalty.

There used to be night rallies in the lakes, and to keep the fuzz happy, times would be accepted they were more than a 30mph average, this being on 60mph roads.

But up on the fells not much could average 30, so the local 2000cc cars could have a blast.

But the authorities eventually caught on and said anything over 20mph average wasn't allowed. And there ended the rallies.
