Emphasis on amateur, this is a 'log' for fellow average people to see and not be at all intimidated by! So If ya looking for owt impressive, close the tab now.
Also, It's not really a log, so much as an arena for me to vent and fill some time, which I'm increasingly having more of... .
Here's basically the build, carrying over a dependable 1tb HDD.
Not for any fancy use, just an upgrade from an aging Phenom x4 965 w/2gb 7850pro in time for Fallout 4.
Upgraded the last rig with the 970, carrying it into this one, but with the full intention of going SLI Pascal next year - which also explains the lackluster PSU, just a placeholder I got very cheap. I was going to get the beautiful NZXT H440 case.
But then I saw this Rajintek Aeneas on youtube randomly ,and absolutely just fell in love, it enamored me. Personal taste being subjective n all. It did of course force me into a Micro ATX build.
Wanting SLI capability down the road and an m.2 slot, this left me with the Asus Gene Motherboard(hence the build name).
What was to be my pride and joy was the Samsung 951 NVMe, I just wanted it's raw speed, looked like a massive jump! I was excited at the prospect.
Delay One: 17th of September
Sadly it was out of stock everywhere, would be available in 3 days. I don't pre-order anything, so held fire.
Delay Two: 20th of September
Not in stock in NVMe anywhere still. I sulk.
Delay Three: 22nd of September
I wake up to some good news, Samsung 950 Pro has been freshly announced, a better consumer version of the 951, the delays saved me! Yay! Though it does mean a longer wait... .
Delay Four: 29th of September.
I pickup that I may be able to get the 950 for October 16th!! Sweet.
That's only 2 weeks! I immediately decide to order every other component.
Delay Five: 6th of October.
Everything is here! Rather than a traditional Boxes shot, I laid every component out to get an appreciation for just what goes into the belly of our Beasts. Took my mind off of the fact the 950 Pro had been delayed another week.
Pretty cool isn't it? Everything you see there is in my PC, bar some extra screws, and the plastic under the CPU&Mobo, plus thermal paste bag and dye bottle. Oh and not the chairs n stuff
Oh except, what's that in the bottom right?
Not having the main storage drive meant I couldn't do much. I Power tested it though, don't worry built it on my bathroom floor, as opposed the carpeted spare room.
Disappointment One: 7th of October.
I decide to put it mechanically together the best I can, and the Detachable motherboard tray that I had in mind for a perfect testing environment, isn't as useful as I thought, due my decision to by the AIO water cooler.
I couldn't get the radiator and fans to sit safely anywhere but in the case so had to attach it in there, and hope it seated right and everything else was OK as well.
Disappointment Two:
I was fairly confident going into the build that I knew what I was doing. I'd only built 2 machines for people, tho the last was 6 years prior, but hey, It's just like LEGO right? Anyhoo I made some basic faux-pas, so I disappointed myself.
Thankfully ASUS' Q-Codes were very helpful and I progressed past POST.
Disappointment Three: I wasted hours completely an utterly unable to explain why I couldn't see anything, after my trials getting to POST correctly, I'd assumed the Display would be a cinch. Sadly not.
Hours putting bits in and out, tweaks, googling and head scratching and the day was lost. Next day turns OUT ASUS' VIII gen motherboards have some HDMI display issues, connected via my GPU, and wham, straight into the BIOS.
Frigging hours of time wasted doubting myself, when I'd done nowt wrong, other than blame myself n not see the obvious.
Disappointment Four: This brought into light a HUGE oversight on my part. I liked my case to due to the horizontal motherboard.
I'd selected the AIO to 'match' it despite preferring air cooling, as It had lights and configurable dye that I thought would look pretty damn sweet.
Allowing me to change the colour every few months if I decided to, or accentuate a new colour scheme If I ever felt confident enough to make my build 'blingy' in the future.
Anyhoo, yeah... the damn thing did look cool, great to my simple expectations even!
But looking from the case's window... the GPU completely blocked everything, can't see ****. Huge disappointment after I'd taken a risk and stepped outside my comfort zone to get an AIO.
Pre GPU: (looks better in the dark, duh)
Post GPU:
Pascal better be a pretty-ass GPU...
Delay Six: 16th of October.
So I sit twiddling my thumbs waiting, hoping it's here in 3 days... and the 950 is delayed everywhere to the 30th of October... the date OverClockers always said by the way, so yeah. And that's just to suppliers, may not even get it built in time for Fallout 4.
Just delays and disappointments so far. I have an empty husk taunting me from the next room, while I while-away on a PC built before Instagram even existed.
So yeah, to any budding builder out there, really try to visualise your components as a whole, and how they fit together. I'm 100% a function over form or aesthetics kinda guy, but I wanted one or two nice touches that I failed on. To be disappointed after spending £1000 is not a great feeling.
TL;DR: Thought my build was in-gene-ious, instead it's decidedly more ignominious.
