My RX8 Restoration Thread

Can have them, will speak with Dwayne tomorrow and make sure they're ok to have, Calipers work 100%, discs and pads will be worn, but you can have the lot free if he's not binned them which I doubt it. And I'm off down Cannock way Thursday evening on way to friends... could drop them off for you if you want? Then if you use them great if not, throw them?

Fair enough Sounds brilliant, cheers.

Nice, always interesting to see someone really care and improve their cars.. I think the RX8 is aging well looks wise.

That's been a lot of work for you so far, and a great result in return ( I love the colour too).
Now to cram a whole lot more HP under the lid so the performance matches not only it's appearance but it also reflects your hard work.

I would love to own a rx8. But the running costs would scare me. (Engine rebuild and oil usage blah blah). One day I may get one

Fills those front wheels nicely. And the purples relevantly eye catching, those calipers look worthy of an eye catching colour.

Cheers man. Yeah if you're gonna go monster calipers, go monster colour. Red just would't suite the car, Black didn't show much, and yellow would be vile, so purple was a car that I think suits the colour of the car. Happy as and they're incredible stopping power.

And neither came out the factory with anywhere near close to that, was all a lie. Mine is a 231 6 Speed with the extras... it was originally dynoed at 181bhp... I thought someone was having a laugh, after investigating thats around what the RX8 had mid 180's for the high output version and around 145-150bhp for the lower power output, weird as it always felt way quicker than that... so to get 215bhp I had to remap, decat and rear box and filter to get it into the 200's and it's still way down on what Mazda claim they have. Mazda have a history of over inflated power figures...

However, I've done 0-60 and recorded 6.3s myself with a knackered clutch and zero talent rofl, so it's there or there abouts.

The problem is unless you take the engine out and dyno directly at the flywheel you are exposed to the fudge factors they have to put in. The RX8 does actually generate much closer to its claimed numbers. The fudge conversion factors typically used are too low. It is rear wheel drive with an LSD and so something between 20-25% is much better rather than the usual 15% that seems to be used. An additional issue was that despite switching off the traction control system it was still holding the engine back. To stop it completely the fuse had to be pulled.

This restoration looks stunning! I really want to do this.

MOTing the Prelude on Monday. If it gets through and I manage to sell it for more than 10p I'm totally going to roll the dice on an RX8.

Yea, apart from the reliability issues the other big factor were the power outputs which put me off going for one. There doesn't even seem to be a science to it. I know there was a Class action lawsuit in America over the lies.

That was related to the 250bhp version running under different emission regulations (plus isn't 250 bhp JIS similar to 231bhp SAE/DIN?) Emissions regulations are much more strict in UK and US. So they retested them to 231bhp.

Great work all in all but why are the calipers branded after a defunct German mobile phone network who used to sponsor DTM (I mean the exact logo and everything). That would immediately ring a few alarm bells for me. It would be like having One-2-One or Cellnet calipers!
