This is quite funny, my school uses a thing called 'Websense' to block websites that students shoud not be viewing. Im sad to say that these forums are blocked. But today I tryed to go on a website that is the biggest educational website in the world, guess what that website is........wait for it...........................the website is Wikipedia. WTF they have stopped students from going on Wikipedia, and the reason that Websense shown for this, is because it is 'Tasteless'.

What other website blockers does your school use, and what websites has it blocked that seem very reasonable?

our school once blocked its own website because it was "unresourceful". they later realised what they'd done and decided to be a bit less strict with the blocker.

edit: Mikol i think you quoted the wrong quote.

Probably got auto-blockede because someone thought it'd be funny to look at rude stuff. Go ask ze adminzors un unlollifyblock it :) (though I recall individual schools not having much control over these sorts of things :/ )

quoted wrong person! doh!!

A lot of my lecturers will disregard certain information taken from such sites like wikipedia. Only government and specific medical journal sites are considered resourceful.

back when I was at college the admins managed to ban all websites that had urls containing .com

I never had internet at school :( They did start introducing it by lower 6th but it was just a couple of ISDN lines and it was pretty diabolically slow.

I'm the guy who's responsible for blocking/unblocking sites/access to school internet. If a site has anything rude AT ALL or anything violent etc it will be autoblocked, you can probably get it unlocked if you have a chat to your technician or network manager but beware school internet access is for educational purposes only you have NO RIGHT to view ANY website.

Having said that a lot of people are a bit over the top I rarely block sites except myspace/bebo/piczo because of bullying on them and ratemyteacher for obvious reasons (after having a good laugh at some of the comments) :D

They used to use websense at my old school but tbh its no problem to get past. Just run though a proxy, nobody stopped me from browsing ebay in ICT :p

My school uses WebSense, but it's useless to me anyway because I can always get through. Some geographical websites were blocked for "Gambling" and once they managed to block the whole internet and not realise (dumb techies tbh.)

The filtering our ISP uses is awful. They've got it really badly set up because they're obviously too cheap to fork out for a decent server cluster to handle it. It doesn't even do reverse DNS lookup, so all you need to do is go to netcraft, find the IP address of somewhere, and away you go.

how do you run through a proxy?
never understood how to do that!

In my school ebay.com/.co.uk is banned but not .ie :)

The techies tend to block things when they have discovered people use them loads. i.e. most normal games sites are blocked but one on the 80th page on google search for a game site isnt.
