Got a bit of a problem with my Smoke detector. It lets of one high pitched beep once every few minutes. My first thought was that it'd be the battery was flat so I took the case off and there is no battery in there. It seems to be a mains powered one. Its a rented house so I cant just replace it and my landlord is away so I cant get him to come and sort it for me.

My 2 concerns are:
1. How do I stop this beeping?
2. Does it still work?

Have you tried the Test button if it has one?

Might be telling you it's time to check, also test it by lighting a bit of paper and putting it our under it, *just as long as this isn't a flat and it tells everyone to get out and calls the fire brigade* :o

Or get the moddle number/make and google for the manual.

1. How do I stop this beeping? use a big hammer
2. Does it still work? it wont after step 1

It'll be mains powered, but it'll also have some sort of capacitor or battery in too, so that if a fire causes the power to the building to be lost, it will have a backup supply to go off if the smoke reaches it.

That is what's failed and needs replacing. And good luck to you, as I've got a capacitor-based one and I have no idea how to get a spare.

I just took mine apart and once I disconnected the capacitor, it stopped beeping.

Result, as it didn't like my cooking anyway.

They do have a finite lifetime, perhaps it is reaching it's end? Go out and buy yourself a cheap replacement and put it up. The universe is perverse enough to kill you in your sleep with smoke the day your smoke alarm goes **** up.

Too true, this has all the hallmarks of a '999' special :p
They are pretty cheap to get a battery one and you can take it with you if you move
