k i'm just posting this here so anybody can voice their views and say whetehr they think i'm making any drastic mistakes:

asus p5q pro
8800gt bfg OC
e2180 @3.4 (hopefully)
4gb ocz 667 mhz

i've already bought the processor and ram ages ago, but i'm doing a upgrade of mobo and graphics card... despite people advising me to buy a cheaper motherboard, i think i'l go with this one because, for it's value, it seems the most future proof... i dont liek upgrading mobos, as it makes u feel as if ure buying a whole new computer, and then u have to admit to upgrading every year :P... so hoepfully this motherboard should give me some time over other ones... another reason related why i chose this is because of the pcie 2.0.. i dont think it will be long till we are limited by pcie1.1 so i wouldnt want that limiting me if i were to upgrade g card...

i chose the 8800gt because i play at 1280x1024, and i get *** impression all the new cards do is help with high res.. i'l also plan to overclock the card (heat dependant) to speeds near the zotac amp, but i'm going with the bfg because of lifetime warranty...

so does anybody want to comment, does this seem a wise system?...

I would go for the 8800GTS 512mb, 6 more posts and you can access the members market where you can grab one for a steal. I think I saw one go for 110 recently

ok so you're advising higher graphics cards... because i'm looking for a future proof system how much am i likely to gain from spending another £40?.. i get the impression gt's have been aroudn for a while, and it may be their time to go obsolete?..

The GT cards will be capable cards for some time to come, but since the 8800GTS 512mb has come down so far in price it's worth it in my opinion, especially if you can grab a 2nd hand one for cheap.

Also, there are new cards coming out at the end of this month and it would be worth it to hold on to see how they perform. The 4850 will most likely be in your pricerange and should be significantly faster than the 8800GT and hopefully the 8800GTS 512mb as well.

As for members market:
faq said:
The members market is provided as a free service to active and contributing forum members. OcUK are not liable for any deals that are done in the Members Market, you are free to buy and sell at your own risk. Please read the rules of the Members Market before you proceed to make your first sale.

Access to the Members Market forum requires two things. Firstly, you will need to have over 250 posts and have been signed up for at least 90 days. Please note that this does not mean you spam the forums simply to increase your posts, as this action will result in posts being deducted, and if you continue this behaviour, your account will eventually be banned/suspended. Once you reach 250 posts, you will need to activate your trust. This is either found in your UserCP, or you can press the trust button that appears at the bottom of all your posts.

Once you satisfy both of these criteria, Members Market access will be granted within 24hrs. Please do not post on the forums asking why you cannot access the members market, if you have any queries, email one of the forum Dons/Admins. The contact addresses are available in the FAQ.

***edit*** My 4850th post! It's an omen of good ATI things to come! you should wait!

hmm... i may have to have a look, though whats the deal with warranty on those type of things?.. does warranty (with manufacutrer) expire once they've passed 2 hands?.... oops just posted after you: reading ure post now

8800 GTS can be purchased for around that price (make sure it is the 512MB version though obviously).

If you can wait the new ATI cards will be out, but we aren't exactly sure how much they will be and what (if any) difference they will make to prices of other cards.

Many of us change gfx cards quite often and having one fail is pretty rare, so it's worth it for many people.

If you are more cautious then you may prefer to buy something new, and in that case as we stated before, you should wait for the next gen cards to launch.

ok thanks very much for the advice i'l hold fire for a while, but not for too long, and hopefully reviews will start coming out on the mobo (some already have, and seem promising)...

hoepfully see wha nvidia and ati are pulling out the bag.. thanks v much for all the advice...

btw where do you stand with second hand cards and warranty?.. does manufacturer warranty still apply?.. (i know it can vary but any general idea?)
