I built a PC about a year ago (2500K, AMD 6950) and it was a bit unstable from the outset, grey-screening on occasion when the graphics card was under strain. I replaced the PSU, but the problem continued, so I sent the gfx card back and put in an old 4890. Coincidentally, the new PSU's fan went and I had it replaced by Corsair on the same day that I installed the 4890.
Two days later, the computer has a spectacular crash while playing Skryim - it began turning itself on and off again, over and over, until eventually none of the fans or the graphics card would start; the 4890 had three red LEDs lit up, presumably indicating it was borked. I reset the CMOS via the jumper but it couldn't complete the POST.
I pulled an old graphics card out of my box of useless spares and it had the same problem, so I assumed the PSU had packed it in. I dug up an old PSU and installed it, solving the problem with both cards.
Where it gets confusing is that I decided to test the apparently faulty PSU before boxing it and it worked. The system has been stable this evening, but there's are two odd problems that I can't figure out.
When I reboot the computer or exit BIOS, the PC turns itself off and then turns itself back on about five seconds later. When I shut down the PC, the fans keep spinning even though the HDDs, etc, have turned off, and I can only stop them by holding down the power button for five seconds.
This happens with both the old and new PSUs and graphics cards (or any combination of them), so it appears they are not to blame. Is it possible the crash damaged the motherboard? I've cleared all of its settings and installed new firmware, but it hasn't helped.
