Ok I had to post this as a main thread because I want to tell people who are considering getting a 260-216 this:

Even though I really enjoyed the hd3870 this replaced : I never got this-

Cool running - 48 degrees at the mo!

Quieter - I always thought the fans on my computer were noisy even though I put in quiet fans and could still hear a noise. I never considered the g.card would be noisy on idle/deskop. I got a shock with the 260-216. Silence..

I managed P12448 on Performance on 3d mark vantage.

Text is also sharper on my crt.

Oh..and if you want to replay Crysis/Crysis Warhead I had 1600 res/enthusiast settings with 'mostly' 4x aa and it was smooth...playing Crysis Warhead again with this card was like playing a new game.

Very well made.

Highly recommended..if you're considering it then go for it.

And at the mo ...no instabilities.

Nvidia produce higher quality cards, end of story. ATI may be cheaper but the quality is not as good.

;)

Just what I wanted to hear, but what I would like to know is how it compares to a 8800GTS-640 I currently have.

i know you're fishing but i'll still bite. LOL

i have recently got a Sapphire 4870 which arrived with the new "TOXIC" type cooler attached. This replace my old Nvidia 7900GT. Huge upgrade.

the thing i was impressed with the most is Fan Noise (on 40%) is silent. Temps (idle @ 40-42deg / 48-52deg on load) and the build quality.

Everything is solid and the drivers work a treat too.
Even clocking the card up to 800/4000 was easy so it's clocked higher than the toxic version.

i was going to get the black edition 260 but found mine for over £60 cheaper.

I think in general NV are quieter, use less power, and run cooler. I don't think overall that those points are debateable.

ATI have produced some very good price/performance cards this year though.

Shopping around is always advisable you can find bargains by either company.

Malazan was referring to reference cards, without 'exotic' coolers.

I'd happily recommend an ATI card to someone else but I do have to admit that my two experiences with ATI (9800pro and 1950XTX) will make me think twice before buying them again - just a bit buggy at times.

It's hard to argue with the value of the current ATI cards however...

I'm gonna get a 260 of some description in the new year, maybe just a 2nd hand 192, it will be a huge step-up from my old faithful 8800GTS in any case. I may go and buy something like this or XFX Black Edition.

So good to hear about the noise and temp.

Yeah the noise and temp is very good. I haven't checked the load temps yet but looking at review sites it should be about 77ish.

I looked at the temp after 3d mark 06 and it went to 66..but it wouldn't be fully stressing with that.

After the 8800 debacle when it first came out with no vista 64 drivers for ages/well not working properly I was expecting driver issues..but none ..I also prefer the control panel.

However I did like the hd3870 and I'm not a 'fanboy' of either make...however if anything I was a fanboy of ati in the sense that I favoured them.

The thing that put me off the hd4870 was the idle wattage..higher than the 260-216.

A lot of the time the comp is on just at desktop/browsing..with higher fps for me it was a non-brainer ; lower temperatures too.

I know you can get the toxic sapphire but to me imo the 4870 isn't as good(stability etc.) as the 260s.

I don't see nearly as many probs with them. I can see people saying well 4870s sell a lot more..however I didn't see many probs with the 3870s on here etc -you just get a 'sense' and I went with that.

The ironic thing about this is the whole laptop graphic chipset design debacle of recent...

When Nvidia are being questioned on the quality/reliability by the likes of Apple and Dell I'd say thats definate fly in the ointment as they're going to see some serious numbers before making public statements to this effect (which Apple did). Quality from either company is completely dependant on the individual card, where it was made, who resold it, with the occasional key design fault ;)
Then theres those 79** series cards...
