installed ok.... but thats where it all went wrong....

nvidia wouldnt let me install their latest drivers, since it said that the operating system wasnt vista.... despite trying to force the install through the device manager, it too decided that my drivers were up to date, although the ones that came with vista was signed July 2006....

ok, i could live with that, seeing as how it was going to be a htpc/media server... so the latest video drivers went all that important (not!)

so, proceeded to install sophos antivirus, which managed to upset windows defender since it wasnt "trusted", and would block it every time it auto loaded at start up.... when i tried to add it to the trusted list, defender would hang and a reboot would be needed.... okayy, i could live with that, so try to uninstall sophos... only to be told that the uninstaller didnt have the privileges to continue, despite admin rights.... so now i have a broken anti-virus...

hmm... i still can live with that.... install my TV card software (compro T200).. everything went well, but on starting, it told me that no display adapter could be found.... its auto-load scheduler also fell foul of windows defender....

finally, i tried to install my VNC server/client, guess what, first it gets flagged for being a "remote control virus" fine, added to "always allow", then it gets tagged by defender on startup... and guess what? defender hangs when i try to change any settings to it to allow any of my programs to run....

My question to everyone is, HOW DO I TURN OFF THIS IDIOTIC WINDOWS DEFENDER!!!! everytime i try to do something its fair enough i need to click to allow things, but when this silly program tells me that i cannot do this, cannot do that, it is really annoying..... and to top it all off, it hangs and needs a reboot..... "%$£^£^$"$%£^$£^$£%....

I am 90% convinced i need to format and go back to WinXP and wait for vista to be fixed.....

i've tried that, it hangs and needs a reboot....

maybe i'll format the whole thing, then the first thing i do is to neuter defender....

thanks for the suggestion....

What you describe sounds like UAC? try this...

Removing the UAC check

1. Launch MSCONFIG by from the Run menu.

2. Click on the Tools tab. Scroll down till you find "Disable UAC" Click on that line.

3. Press the Launch button.

4. A CMD window will open. When the command is done, you can close the window.

5. Close MSCONFIG. You need to reboot the computer for changes to apply.

Note that you can re-enable UAC by selecting the "Enable UAP" line and then clicking on the Launch button.
