My Vista is falling apart

I've got installed a legit copy of vista 64 Business. And ever since that service pack 1 was released i've been having problems. I saw it in the updates and thought oooh so chose to download and install it. This then disabled my on board sound. I chose to uninstall sp1 and wait for a new realtek drivers to come out.

So it has been uninstalled and lots of problems have arisen. My network connection to my router (Wired) keeps losing its connection, and whenever a program is closed e.g. wmp or ff it won't close properly - a windows "firefox has stopped working" window keeps coming up. I've done a system restore which restores it to just before when i installed sp1. It works fine for a while but all these problems keep coming back. (without me installing any updates or anything else)

Any ideas?

this probably isn't what you want to hear, but i'd re-install windows. download the full .exe of sp1 first though and save it on your disk. then immediately after installing vista, even before you install any drivers, install sp1. now install all your drivers/apps.

someone else might have a better idea but when it comes to time management, i quite often find a clean install is just quicker than trying to troubleshoot random problems. i guess it depends on how customised your OS is currently. and of course, how much stuff you have installed. :p

i keep all my application configs on another partition so when i re-install windows, i've got everything back just how i like it within minutes.

Hi thanks for the response! i thought so... i'm "repairing" it now. Using this guide

How did you set your app configs on another partition? Seems quite handy. I have about 5 partitions! I'll need to install quite a lot of things thinking about it - but this repair technique is meant to keep system files intact but we'll see about that!

To be honest I'd do a full re-install and SP1 it before anything else. I never trust uninstalling service packs, they leave a trial of problems.

We could really do with a Vista sticky that covers both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Vista and maybe a FAQ. The kind of information in this thread would be useful under a vista installation procedure guide for example.

Ok its done it again after a fresh install.. the culprit was the java run time environment. After i installed that the network connection just dropped. I've done multiple things and eventually its connecting to my router again. In the networks centre it says it is connected to the internet. The sidebar has gadgets like national railway enquiries and weather. They seem to connect to the net fine.. but nothing else can!! Anyone else experience this?

i had a similar experience when first installing XP sp2, so i avoided sp2 for about 2 months, then when i formatted fully with an xp sp2 disc, didn't have a single problem

sometimes certain hotfixes or programs seem to bork an sp update, now with any sp update i just format before hand, saves any possible hassle, although i've never had any problems on any machine in work when updating to newest sp's

just the way she goes
