My Wireless router is causing me to download slow? - Please help!!

Hi there, please can you help me, I'm a newbie with these things and I've had this wireless modem setup for over two years and I've never touched it ever since.

Now for the past 5 days my internet has been going slow and when I unplug my wireless router it goes back to normal and starts downloading at 20mb, but everytime I plug the wireless router back in it goes down to 1-5mb?

I've no idea why this is happening or how to fix it.

Please can you help me, am clueless.

Slow connection over the wireless or just slow in general through a wired connection to the router?

If it has a wireless network on it is that properly secure and you're sure nobody sitting next door is using it?

Could just be the router is on its way out, they don't last forever.
 
Its secure, I have 64bit incription with a key and passwords, so yeah am pretty sure nobody is hacking me next door and using it.

And I have tried restoring factory defaults and changing the channal the wireless goes out on and other settings and restarting the router and the PC but nothing changes.

If I unplug the wireless router and just restart my PC and only use my NTL modem then I download at 20mb instantly! But soon as I plug the wireless router back in my speed goes back down to 1-5mb.

I'd hazard a guess that either, a) the router is dying b) someone is using your connection.

64Bit isn't very strong and if it's WEP it's easily crackable.
